Is my axle done for? (1998 V70R)

Post by atomicthumbs »

I noticed a while back that my car shudders above 80 mph when I don't remember it doing that before. Now, it's begun shuddering while going around 50-55 as well, whether accelerating through it or cruising.

I'm half done rotating my tires and discovered this:

That's with the passenger side wheels on the ground and the transmission in Park. The boot isn't torn.

Is that normal, and if not, what's the current best solution that's not paying $500 for a new OEM axle?

You can't always tell by that test. You need to get under the car and grip the inner section of shaft and turn the outer part at the hub to see if the slop is in the CV joint or the transmission itself as there is some in the trans itself.

Your vibration in these cars can come from many places and not just from the front on the AWD cars or even FWD cars.

You will have to check everything for wear:

Front suspension: Check control arm bushes and ball-joints

Steering: Check the inner and outer tie-rods for play, and have the alignment checked.

Wheels/tires: Check for damage to the wheels and tires and balancing. Swap a front and rear tire on one side, drive and test for change and then the other side. If no change then wheels and tires are likely good balance and the rims are not bent.

Drive axle: Check as suggested.

Angle gear: Check it has oil and there is no real slop by turning the prop-shaft and RH axle at the angle gear. The left hand side needs to be checked too as the sleeve that drives the angle gear can strip it's splines as well as those on the angle gear itself.

Prop-shaft: Check for movement and play in the front UJ and the center bearing rubber mount.

Viscous coupling: Hard to test without removal, but check the bearing at the front of it as they fail. Also check the rubber bush on the front mounting arm on the VC casing to the floor.

Rear axle: Check all suspension mounts and arm bushes for rot/wear.

Rear brakes: Check for frozen calipers and de-laminated parking brake shoes.

^ What he said!

That back and forth play in your video is normal as far as I know. Mine has always had that.

PS. Axles for the AWD 98-00 cars getting very difficult to get. Pretty much the only option is to get cheaper ones, with questionable longevity and quality. The OEM ones were always the best quality, but even they are re-manufactured now as well, and I'm not sure if the same price tag is worth it.

What you're seeing in your video is normal. There is inevitable slop in the drive train between the axles and the differential gears, and slop between the parking pawl and parking gear.
