1998 Volvo V70 X/C fuel pump location

Post by Eddystone » Tue Aug 21, 2018 9:12 pm

Is changing the fuel pump in a 1998 Volvo V70 X/C the same as changing the fuel pump in a standard 1998 V70? (inside under the floor access under metal plate with a few bolts)

Or is there something different because of the rear drivetrain components?

Found the sad answer to that question. TWO pumps and must drop entire rear sub-frame. What a terrible design.

What some folk do is to cut through the floor under the passenger rear seats. The RH 'pump' is the only actual pump although some refer to the LHS one as a pump, it actually is only a pressure pump used to transfer the fuel from the LHS of the tank to the RHS to allow the pump to transfer it.

The only thing that goes wrong with the LHS 'pump' is it's ability to help measure the fuel level. The fuel gauge uses a combination of the 2 'pumps' level sensors to work out an average of the 2 sides of the saddle tank contents to give you a single level reading at the gauge. So if your gauge is reading ok, you can risk leaving the LHS alone and just replace only the actual RHS electric pump.

As you have found the 'correct' way to replace the pump is to drop the rear sub-frame to which the fuel tank is hung at it's rear from by it's straps.

I did a thread on replacing the rear sub-frame on my 2000 V70R when it rotted out and cracked.

Hope that helps.

Neil.

I chopped the floor under passenger rear set to do mine as Neil mentioned. Worked out really well, and funny enough, I'm about to use that access again today to replace the leaking gasket there.

There's a good thread here somewhere that shows exactly where you cut if you want to do that route, or I can just take pictures of mine later today.

Photos of yours would be appreciated!

There's a YouTube video of the job being done on a 2004, and Robert also has a video, but I'd appreciate seeing photos of your car.

I totally forgot to take some good pics for you. I did snap a couple as I was blabbing about it with some other Volvoheads.

This may help to give you a bit of an idea where to cut. You can see some other lines are just on the other side of the panel, so it's important to only cut through the metal and not past it, if you get what I'm saying.

It's crude... but it works.

I've had to change two of them. Through the floor is the way to go. We have a writeup in the repair database that shows exactly where to cut and it goes pretty quickly with a Dremel cutoff wheel. I cut mine so that the top was left intact, I figured it would be a bit stronger for the seat mount. Be careful not to cut deep beyond the metal itself since there are lines directly behind the are you are cutting in.

For the repair I cut some sheet metal and pop riveted it in on the back side of the remaining chassis sides leaving it extending into the cut area. When I folded the access part that I cut back down I pop riveted it to the new sheet metal that I added. To seal it up waterproof I used some butyl tape that I had left over from installing ground kits on some broadcast coax. You can get butyl tape at electrical supply houses or I think you can even get it at the big box home centers.
