Raw gas smell near fuel pressure regulator, 850t.

Post by rguzz » Sat Feb 23, 2019 2:54 pm

I smell gas near the FPR, recently replaced the short hose to the fuel line itself thinking it might be shot. I still smell gas at or near that site after a decent length drive. Pretty sure it isn't coming from the fuel injectors themselves. When I replaced the hose there was only a drop or so of fuel present in that line, which I assume is normal. Fuel pressure regulator and injectors are original with probably 240k miles on them. Never touched seals or had injectors cleaned as car seems to run fine. I tightened the clamps well on the short hose from regulator to fuel line, using fuel line clamps. Ideas? Thanks.

I had the same problem with my '94 850 N/A. Smell of fuel and bit of wandering idle. I disconnected the vacuum line to it and and fuel came out, meaning the diaphragm in the FPR was bad. Replaced, no smell, smooth idle. I was surprised to find out local auto parts had one in stock about 40 bucks. Good luck.

Well, the only thing I do notice is small amount of hesitation under throttle when cold, lasts maybe 15 seconds then is gone. Probably present over a year or so, not obviously worsening. Fuel pump maybe has 75k miles on it, Volvo OEM. No vacuum leaks noted. Swapped out a few FP relays, no change. When I changed the hose (see above) a few drops of gas came out. The smell is pretty strong, though. Enough to catch a whiff walking around the outside of the car.

The vacuum line side of the FPR should have no fuel in it at all. Is that the line fuel came out of? If you haven't checked that line, pull the line and see.

I assume that's the line with the white plastic tubing and rubber elbow end?

I'm not real real familiar with turbo, but yes that is probably it.

The more I think about all this, I realize this car has also probably been running a bit rich, smells like it, especially after starting up. So, I'll check vacuum lines to FPR and probably swap my spare one, reset ECU, etc. after. See if that solves the problem. Thanks! Unless anyone has anything else...

Nope you are on it - that line with the white plastic tubing and rubber elbow end should be bone dry, FPR is leaking.
