800artfreed, what was the specific Lucas product called? I am at Walmart now looking at something called “Lucas Engine Oil Stop Leak” but I don’t see a Lucas product specifically advertised for stopping powersteering leaks. My leaks are not exactly puddling on the floor but there is obvious fluid on the crossmembers under the end of the rack seals.

My car is a 98 base model V70, manufactured in 5/1997. Definitely has the pulley mounted PS res, not the one like the 99+ models on the side by the coolant overfill.

I feel stupid putting the Castrol ATF in there now, but that’s what all the manuals said. Can I put in a warranty claim, lol? I feel like it must have already been leaking because it drove fine at night and when I pulled out the next day it was surging and making all kinds of noise. When I pulled the res cap there was hardly any fluid in there and it was bubbling like a shaken up glass of Pepsi.

Which is better ATP205 or Lucas? I also see a product called Bar’s Leaks power steering repair. I’m not in a super hurry to buy it tonight as the car is going to sit till Wednesday anyway.

I know this is a stupid question, but what would happen if I pumped this system full of 75w gear oil? Just curious...
Thanks.

I can only vouch for ATP as it stopped the blue wisps of smoke on acceleration after a long downhill.

Ps fluid isn’t that critical but ATF is correct for the 1999 model year.

I have Pentisin in mine now because I use that in the 2005 as well

Both ATP and Lucas have been reported as successful

Lucas makes a stop leak product for PS systems. It says Power Steering Stop Leak on the bottle, not to be confused with their engine oil stabilizer and stop leak. 75w gear oil would not end well.

Connect the feed hose to the return hose?? Could easily not work as well. In theory, it COULD work.

We had someone here who ran their pump without oil for many months, I think.

If anyone needs a pressure fitting to canabilize, Ive got one from the 1998 car

As I am viewing on my ancient phone, I am missing what car we are talking about. Is it the 850 wagon on your profile? Anyway whatevet P80 version is it a turbo? When was the pcv ladt changed? Both can lead to issue where engine oil can leak down the back of the block onto the power steering rack.
You dont mention how much fluid you are losing? Assuming you have checked the pump reservoir how much are you losing?

Old thread resurrection - it was on a 1998 V70 FWD that paradoxically enough is now in my garage.

Just to chime in on the ATF vs "synthetic" issue, I found on my 99 with the fender mounted reservoir, the fluid in the PS system was the CHF-11 type. I posted an explanation of my reservoir foaming and noise issue in a separate post. After fixing the reservoir I exchanged the ATF (pink) I had added and flushed it with the Pentosin (green) PS fluid. All has been good since.
