Broken power connector for 1996 Volvo 850 ABS Control Module

Post by kcanmoore » Thu May 16, 2019 10:58 am

The code reader said the ABS Control Module was faulty and I ordered a new one online. After locating and buying an E5 external torx socket, I followed the instructions on this site and removed the old module. I didn't notice until I was about to reconnect the power connector, but the plastic plug slipped off of the round metal clips that fit on the two posts (the plug is not in very good shape) and I cannot determine which wire goes on which post in order to prevent a short-circuit to the new module, or worse, to the onboard computer. The posts are identical and not color-coded. Any suggestions?

If you get them backwards it won't short anything out, the pump motor will just run backwards. It is a 50/50 crapshoot but I can't think of any damage that would be caused by being on the losing side of the bet.

Are the wiring the same long size ? Is it possible to see on a wiring diagram which goes or come from where to where ?

When plugged, switch ignition on and read codes again ? Maybe the issues will be seen..

Hope this helps.

I had to rebuild my abs module.
Been dreading that as the pump wires insulation was perished to begin with.
Removed the abs module and what was left of the insulation disintegrated.
Pulled the pump cap off so I could re-sleeve the wires best I could.
Cleaned the wires (one at a time).
Pushed white heat shrink as far into the body as I could.
Sleeved the rest of the wire with the correct colour shrink.
Pushed a bit of silicon into the the cable entry on the pump body to try and stop the wires from rubbing or shorting.

Refitted the 'plug'. Although more for looks than any practical use.

Pushed the pump terminals onto the module pins.
Slide the plug body over the top for appearances.
A month later and it all still seems to work fine.

Was a fun job :/
