Re: When it's time to move on (and what did you buy?)
I did not and kinda stopped looking for a bit. My AC is running cold again now that my fan works well. Ha. That one seems almost too cheap...$2500 for a $40k car that is 12 years old? Depreciation sucks.MoVolvos wrote: ↑Wed Jul 10, 2019 2:20 am-wheelsup wrote: ↑Sun Jun 02, 2019 12:44 pm
I was concerned about transmission issues and replacement parts costs on the XC90's. I've been doing some research and it seems the 2008 and up is a safer bet but is there an engine/transmission combo that is better? Generally I would steer clear of any turbo as that adds complexity and I wonder about costs on the V8 as well. Same idea for AWD which I don't need at all.
Did you ever find anything. This one is back again from 20 days ago. 3.2 Non-Turbo, FWD

Re: When it's time to move on (and what did you buy?)
Hell, if I had the cash I'd pick it up in an instant for $2,500! I'm passively shopping for another XC90 for myself, but I'd like either a V8 or T6. Maybe even a 2.5 and I'll bolt a 19t onto it... hmm...

Re: When it's time to move on (and what did you buy?)
We bought a 2010 Ford Focus for my son to replace the 1996 850 wagon, we hated
to see the Volvo go given all the work I did on it so his girlfriend is still using it.
The Focus has essentially a Mazda 3 drivetrain and an engine with a timing chain
rather than a belt.

B5254T3
The B5254T3 is a 2.5 L (2,522 cc) straight-five. Bore is 83 mm (3.3 in) and stroke is 93.2 mm (3.7 in) with a compression ratio of 9.0:1. It is turbocharged and intercooled with a power output of 220 PS (162 kW; 217 hp) at 5000 rpm with 320 N⋅m (240 lb⋅ft) of torque at 1500–4800 rpm. On cars with the AW55-51 automatic transmission, torque is limited in first and second gear.[169] It has VVT and is equipped with Bosch ME 9.0[170] engine management system.[171] Unlike previous designs, the turbocharger is integral with the exhaust manifold.
Adaptations of this engine were used by Ford, with power levels ranging from 220 PS (217 bhp)[172] to 350PS (345 bhp).[173] At Ford the engine was called "Duratec-ST",[174] "Duratec ST"[175] or "Duratec RS".[176]
Applications:[177]
2005–2008 Volvo S40 II[127] badged as S40 T5
2005–2008 Volvo V50[127][178] badged as V50 T5
2007 Volvo C30 badged as C30 T5
2006[179]–2007[180] Volvo C70 badged as C70 T5
2005[181]–2011 Ford Focus[170] badged as Focus ST[182]
2009[183]–2010[184] Ford Focus badged as Focus RS[183] The engines as configured for the Ford Focus RS Mk. 2 and RS500 where not used in any Volvo model. They can be described as a RNC version of the S60R/V70R B5254T4 engine. Lower compression (different pistons), stronger connecting rods, same geometry Camshafts as B5254T4 but different (dual) VVT units. These engines use a bigger Borg-Warner K16 turbo instead of the K04, the K16 turbo is an integrated manifold turbocharger, it slightly outperforms the K24 used on the B5254T4 S60R/V70R engine.
2011 Ford Focus badged as Focus RS 500[173]
2008–2012 Ford Kuga badged as Kuga 2.5T[185][186] 2008-2010 Euro 4, 2011-2012 Euro 5.

Re: When it's time to move on (and what did you buy?)
That 5 cylinder was only available on the old European market Focus. It's a great engine for the Focus RS/RS500!
Yeah... a timing chain isn't a selling point for me. I've had too many engines with bad timing chains to think it's a better setup. I just had to do one on a Dodge 4.7L V8 and a couple years ago my Saab 9-5 needed one, but I never changed it because I sold it off as a project anyway.
A lot more work for something that SHOULD last much longer than a timing belt. Both of these engines had well under 200k miles on them, too.

Re: When it's time to move on (and what did you buy?)
When you use a chain you munch up guides and cam gears get ground to nubs.
You will feel much better after not paying the $500-1000 timing belt tax, doing it yourself with Volvo parts
