my 98 s90 has a oil cap leek is it a common problem? thanks

The gasket under the top gets hard, and is a cheap thing to replace every few years.

Just so you don't feel bad about your onion problem, OP, I once pulled off the freeway to clouds of burned oil smoke pouring out the wheelwell. Little did I know, the hard oil cap gasket had failed, oil had filled the valve cover valley, then run down the back of the engine and onto the hot exhaust and turbo housing.

It was Friday afternoon on Memorial Day weekend, in a small town with no dealer, so we filled it up and high-tailed it to a bigger city with a Volvo dealer, pulled into the service desk with 15 minutes 'til 5, and bought the last one they had on the shelf. Vacation saved!

Check your leeks for point of origin. Natural leeks fry well in butter, synthetic in oil. Google "synthetic oil leeks" for more info.

The gaskets do get hard and stop sealing. Need to be replaced periodically.

There should ALSO be a slight vacuum at the filler cap hole if your PCV system is working correctly and pulling the oil fumes and other gases into the engine to be burned. If that system gets blocked with crud, you will end up with a positive pressure situation inside your engine that pushes oil past any seals, depending on how bad the situation is.

You can have leakage past an old, hard oil cap seal even if the engine ad fume scavenging system is working properly.

You can do a quick check of that system by pacing a plastic bag or rubber glove over the open filler hole. If the bag is pulled down slightly, you are good (vacuum exists). If it blows the bag away, your oil trap and/or lines are clogged with old dry oil crud and will need to be replace. That job is a pain in the butt, but it is a regular maintenance task.

WARNING I think that is the wrong part for your s90
The part linked above fits an XC90 but the OP mentioned a 1998 S90

I think the part in question is really

Steelfish, take your cap off, flip it over and look at the type of gasket/rubber washer you have. Is it wide an flat (like my link) or skinny and round (in cross section) like the first link?

if you order a replacement, get a few (they're cheap) and replace once a year.
