At 241k, second replacement.
One hour to knock off spindle. I stupidly used wrong socket on balljoint bolt, androunded it off. I cut it off in 3 minutes with Dremel, awesome save.
Everything else was easy. Bearing was gritty and nasty turning.
New one FAG from FCP, about $118
Used new hardware onbearing and ball joints, and axle shaft bolt (1999 M8 bolt)
Ball joint hardware
BUFO M8 x 50 mm Grade 8.8 Flange bolt 988185
Flange Nut M8 987891
I still have faint drumming on left swerve, disappears on right swerve.
Differential?
Axle shaft?
Rear wheel bearing? ( probably try this first since I have free one from 1998)
Job time, 3 hours with a 1 hour conf call in middle where I cleaned parts on bench

Re: 1999 V70T5M56 right front wheel bearing
Hmm, do you enjoy swapping parts or would you like to try to diagnose?
I am deaf in one ear and can't tell direction of car noises, extremely frustrating. I used to ask my wife to tell me which corner of car a particular noise was coming from. Well she would always know the answer ... the problem is that she was wrong about 50% of the time. Given that there are 4 corners to a car, I guess that is better than totally guessing.
I really wanted a better approach to finding source of noises. Here is my latest idea, I haven't tried it yet, but it will work (I am confident just like my wife!) as long as you don't need to drive so fast that wind noise obscures the sound.
You already know it is on the right side since it happens when you swerve left. Take a cell phone and firmly secure it in front wheel well with voice recorder turned on. Drive car (preferably not fast due to wind noise), re-create sound and note time and speed of vehicle. Move cell phone to rear wheel well and drive car on same road with same speed and similar swerve and note time again. Just need to play back sound and determine which one is louder. Sound amplitude gets cut in half for every doubling in distance from microphone, so the offending corner will be much louder. Once you know what corner is the problem, you can further move the phone around to determine where is the loudest spot.

Oh\oooh, that’s mean.....Hmm, do you enjoy swapping parts or would you like to try to diagnose?

I don’t mind having done the FWB since it was shot , and I’ve got a free RWB from my parts car. The RWB job is much easier, too, on a FWD only car.

Re: 1999 V70T5M56 right front wheel bearing
Interesting those used E-torx.
How long ago was the drivers front done?
Only reason I ask is I just did front wheel bearings on the 06 I just sold. Prior to replacing both, I spent about 2-300 miles of diagnosing it as the front drivers side being failed. Seemed plausible as you spend more time turning right than left (ramps, clover leafs). Well replaced that & to my immediate dismay the noise was still present. Replaced passenger front & the noise gone completely. The noise emanated from the drivers side but as it turned out was the right front. I seem to get 150-160k out of fronts before they start making noise.
Edit: oops, didn’t know I was in this section.

Front driver side done at 180k, about 60k miles ago.
I’m going to keep driving it until I can really isolate the noise
I used new E Torx per Volvo instructions
Used verb vs used adjective!!

Re: 1999 V70T5M56 right front wheel bearing
Long week in car. Still have slight Vibration on left swerve, goes away on right swerve
I’m going to jack it up today and see if I can feel any grittiness in the right rear wheel bearing.
I’ve got parts off the 1998 I can use here, yeah!

Re: 1999 V70T5M56 right front wheel bearing, also rear wheel bearing - chasing vibration
Update this morning
Jacked up right rear wheel, no play in bearing, no noise, no grittiness.

Re: 1999 V70T5M56 right front wheel bearing, also rear wheel bearing - chasing vibration Topic is solved
Picked up a great trick somewhere and have forgotten where
Go the rear of a BigBox store, which looks like the old Berlin Wall.
This gives you a decent long run of several hundred yards/ meters where you can put down windows and get a better read on noise sources , front or rear.
I’ll try this.

Re: 1999 V70T5M56 right front wheel bearing, also rear wheel bearing - chasing vibration
Forgot to update this one. I occasionally would get some vibration in the right front....and it all disappeared when I replaced the completely trashed front motor mount, on the right side of the subframe.
