Re: 1998 V70 Car starts but has trouble accelerating [low ATF level]

A long overdue update....I finally made to a PnP that's not too far away, managed to find one '98 V70 with the same MAF (as in part number) as mine. Switched them out and the car now runs better with the MAF plugged in!!!!!

On the recommendations of abscate and clemens, I have checked fluid levels and have had to fill the power steering pump. I suspect there is a leak from the hose just before it attaches to the rack. The original hoses are getting very brittle, and sweating. I don't want to touch them until I can remove the same hoses from my silver/gray '98 V70, now a parts car. Those hoses are in much better shape as they were practically new when I pulled them at the PnP and were functional for less than a year (then the car's transmission died).

The up arrow on the dash that lit up when the car was having stalling issues originated from a loose transmission cooler hose at its connection to the radiator. There is a small flexible clamp that fits around the end of the hose when it is attached to the radiator that was coming loose. This clamp helps to keep the hose attached to the radiator. I managed to tighten that clamp and then put another longer clamp around it, then tightened it so nothing moved. I'll have to take a picture of the original clamp and post it here, as it is difficult to describe (thin metal about an inch long, one side is all metal, the other has two bands about 1/8 of inch wide that fit on the outside of the hose after it is attached to the radiator, the space between the two bands is wide enough for the clamp to clip together the end of the hose to the radiator connection). I think it will be easier to understand with a couple of photos. I suppose I could have used some wire to keep the hose connected, but I would have spent more time looking for wire than it took to take apart a worm clamp and install it around the original clamp!

Thanks again for your recommendations!!

K, that could also been the source of your transmission fluid leak. Keep an eye on it. A white paper towel will come up red if it’s seeping at all.

I’ve got a connection in Syracuse if you want to coordianate any parts swap. I think I have a good high pressure PS hose

For those connections at the radiator, I usually use a cable tie around them as a back-up to preventing them popping back off if you re-use or even new ones.

Thanks for your replies!
I am good on PS hoses, thanks!
I'll try a cable tie if the other clamp starts to wobble!

As I recall, when I changed the transmission fluid last summer (or was it the summer before??), I ended up returning a gallon of transmission fluid, as the dip stick read full. But, I don't think I was checking the fluid level with the car running or having ran long enough to get past "warm." There hasn't been any fluid leaking since then. Just had to add some a few months ago after a proper check on the level, when the car was having trouble accelerating. So, I am chalking it up to operator error!! :)
