I’ve ordered the necessary items to do an ignition tune up sans the coil. When I do that I’ll check the sensor connection and check to see the PCV is still connected.

When you do the ignition tune up, check behind the dist rotor plate to make sure the cam seal is still place.

I missed it when was messing with mine, and then discovered a bad oil leak... Had to go back in and replace the seals. They were hard and weren't doing much anyway. I bet yours are similar.

Rear cam seal is good...not really any oil to speak of in the cap

You are good there if you have put eyes on the cam seal and see it is installed and not leaking. Often a blown cam seal doesn't send in much oil, rather it is moisture from combustion gases that causes the misfires.

Thanks for nagging. Started to replace ignition components and when I pulled the cap guess what I found...little slivers of hard black plastic and oil residue. The car had idled for no more than 10 minutes since I had pulled and cleaned the cap before (no bits in it before). That "pop" and smoke when trying to start it apparently blew the cam seal completely out. Thanks for talking about it or I may have missed it since you don't have to pull the end plate/washer to change the rotor. New rear seals are being replaced...exhaust cam had some oil in it too but that seal was still seated. Changing nonetheless. Will know tomorrow if this fixes the issue. Thanks all for the help/input.

That's exactly what mine did when it did the pop and smoke show.

Have you checked out that ECT sensor connector yet? Those suckers are a notorious trouble spot.

Got the new seals and ignition refuels done and she seems to be running fine. Checked and PCV system is working appropriately so hopefully it’s all set. Since I did plugs, wires, cap & rotor I can’t say with certainty which element was the culprit...for all I know it could have been a combination. Thanks everyone for the help on this. I’ll add an update in a few weeks to confirm resolution if it works out.
