99 V70 R rough idle after warm up and stalls

Post by kklepack » Mon Jan 20, 2020 9:48 am

Just got 1999 V70R with 212k and car starts/idles fine for the first 10-15 min. and then begins to stumble/idle rough. Runs fine above 2000 rpms. No codes in on VIDA scan, also It has new XeMODeX ETM installed by previous owner and it was programmed by the dealer.
Looking for help and suggestions and idea how to tackle this problem.

Look for vacuum leaks using WD40 or other flammable spray on hoses and intake manifold gasket areas. Minor leaks are noticed as rough idle and clear as throttle is opened. Don't start a fire!
Old vacuum hoses are prime suspects. Hard plastic flex intake tubes are next suspect.

Thank you for the recommendation I will try this or smoke test this weekend if weather permits.

Be aware, that Xemodex warranty only refers to original owner. I found this out the hard way...........

You are correct. PO bought it from IPD and that info I found on their site. Did you reached out for warranty service to XeMODeX? Did they help? Did you have to buy a replacement ETM from them?

I doubt it's a vacuum leak if it only occurs after 10-15 min. A large vacuum leak leading to intake manifold would cause rough idle all the time, usually with a surge in RPM at start up.

I suspect an issue with the ETM.

So this morning I started up and ran fine and after few 2-3 minutes rough idle started and car died. I restarted again and same symptoms. I also disconnected MAF sensor and no improvement. I will order PCV kit and when it arrives I will check ETM and will try to replace all vacuum lines. Does fuel pressure has something to do whit this?

It was not for the ETM but the brake ABS module. That was when I found out about the ETM warranty as well. Replaced the ABS with one from Matty at Mid-West ABS. Way cheaper and better warranty!

So far ETM has been ok.

My 'R' had not been run in a while and even though the battery was on a trickle charger I knew one of the cells was weak. Car barely ran and ran like it was on 4 cylinders. 2nd start did not have enough power to turn over!! New battery and all went back to normal with sweet running.

So make sure your battery is good on all cells as the 99- cars don't like low powered/weak batteries.

Update: I fired up the car tonight and seems like coolant is in the oil. Take a look at the photo. Am I correct? Or is it some kind of condensation since car ran for few minutes in cold weather. Also seems like coolant level raised when engine got worm. When engine was cold the level was between MIN and MAX. Is it worth spending my time on it or find an another engine?

That looks like cold running condensate , not coolant

Pull the dipstick and look for chocolate milkshake vs brown or black oil.
