99+ PCV question

Hi all- I’ve done two PCV Jobs on ‘98 s70’s— both we’re turbo models. I’m preparing for the job on both my ‘99 NA s70’s and had one question:
Is it true that you can remove the PCV breather box with out taking the intake manifold off in the ‘99 and newer cars? I believe that I read this at one point but can’t find any supporting anecdotes or literature which would point to that. By looking at it visually it looks like it’s possible to do with the right extensions for the bolts that bracket the breather in place.

That would be near impossible, and certainly not advisable

It may be possible, but difficult. As the NA has the Denso throttle body to the side of the intake and not under it you will have some room under there. However as abscate says it will be hard to do even in that case. On a Turbo I wouldn't even consider it. Being able to see the block drains is also an important requirement.

On my old 00 V70 NA I did the full remove, but part of the reason was to get access to the PCV pipes to clean, check and inspect them. Also I had another leak in that area that needed to be found.

Abscate thanks again—

Neil appreciate the input. My fears lie in removing anything related to the ETM on these 99+ cars while they’re in working order. On a ‘98 I can do the full remove and replace in no time at all. Both engines are passing the glove test right now and I change oil every 4K religiously. However there’s some serious staining under the breather on my new ‘99 so it’s probably needing to be done ASAP. The worst of it thus far on my daily is losing about a quart of oil every 5kish. There’s also a chance the gasket on my oil pan is going. Coming up on 40K under my ownership and this would be the first major work I’m giving the car besides timing which I did at 100k so I’m not too bothered.

Don’t sweat your NA ETM. Four bolts, then put it into a nice clean plastic bag, you don’t even need to disconnect the plug. It should be squeaky clean, though. Be careful with solvent, wipe throttle with moist cloth.

I wonder if my V70 back seat would fit Valkyrie?

Like abscate says. Again if it was a turbo ETM then it is possibly a worry, but not on an NA. It is possibly as easy as a 98 NA. Wiping as abscate mentioned with a dampened cloth with cleaner on the throttle body is the way to go. Don't spray it at all.

Dampened with brake cleaner for some cutting power. But definitely don't spray it directly, too risky.

Anyway, I don't think it's possible to get the oil trap out with the intake manifold in place. If the ETM was out on a turbo manifold, you MIGHT be able to pull it off, but I doubt it. I managed to replace the top PCV hose without removing the manifold, but that's easy to get to if you reach under.
