I think you just checked the cams so this is probably irrelevant but: Is the little metal mounting disc under the CPS (and the distributor one for that matter) in the correct orientation? It's possible to mount them wrong and still reassemble, then they are 180 out of phase.

I have not. I thought these were offset, since they go into the cam slots, to prevent this. This might be very good news,

With the crank on the mark and the cams both on the mark, the distributor points to cylinder 4

Which is right??

Following Erik’s lead , I got to thinking this exactly fits every symptom. No firing , frontfire on ether , good spark at plugs

So, I set timing to marks, pulled cap, cylinder 4 firing.

Double check distributor drive plate (couples cam slot to the distributor rotor, one M6 bolt. It looked good , seated it by feel.

Cylinder 4 firing

I go to the intake cam sprocket. Do I have that in backwards or rotated by 120? Doesn’t look possible.

Back to the distributor drive plate. I take it out, look at the cam slots and install it carefully

Guess what? Now the distributor points to cylinder 1

Are you kidding me ??

He tries the key......and Earl comes to life, first time since January

Hooray. Earl is alive and well again. Someone in VT must be very happy right now :D

Kudos to abscate for his willingness to spend a lot of time, energy and brain power to help out a fellow Volvo owner!

Wow. Earl's epic odyssey to Albany. And superhuman effort by abscate. As 850 LPT, points out, what a lot of effort.

15 days to figure this out. Probably about 4-5 hours of actual work time.

Inexperience with the mechanical distributor major factor.

I was putting in the plate by feel, and it will mount up 180 out and look and feel right.

Once I stuffed my mug into the air filter space and really visually matched the cogs to cam slot, all good.

MVS KNOWLEDGE

The rotor position does belong at cylinder 1 with the crank and cams on the marks, and cylinder 1 is near TDC
