Oil Burning 2000 V70

Hi all

My ever reliable 2000 V70 XC AWD (LPT), has been burning a lot of oil recently.

Its always leaked it, but in the past few months it has been burning a lot more than even I would think acceptable.

A quart every 60 - 120 miles. Its got 263K right now, and the car has been in my family for a bit (at least since 130k). I don't think the PCV has ever been changed since we've owned it. At points it will burn so much oil blue smoke comes out of the hood, but if I dog it on the highway it stops doing that.

Other than that information, I don't really know where to start as far as diagnosing it goes.

Where would you guys start?

Do you have oil leaks? If so then chances are the PCV system is clogged and forcing oil past the piston rings. Other options could be a turbo internal leak.

For that level of oil burning it is unlikely to be just valve seals going. Those would highlight by engine being oily on start up and for a while and then only puffing when getting on the gas or overrun.

Is there a way I can rule the turbo out before getting a PCV replacement kit?

I also think that turbo or it's lines are the culprit.

Blue smoke from under the hood can escape from exhaust manifold IF it's cracked or gaskets are bad...broken flexi pipe (if engine is burning oil)or a turbo or it's lines....if oil is leaking on exhaust manifold.

My bet is that you have a BIG leak somewhere in the engine bay....turbo lines or turbo itself are the main culprits.

It seems that you will need to investigate where the oil is leaking from.

+1 to what misha has said along with my earlier post. Danger is if you have a major leak the crankcase pressure will be lower. Fixing the leak may then show a problem with the PCV system. Normally when that gets blocked it takes out your crankcase rear main seal or your cam seals.

Find the leak fix it and then immediately do the glove test on the oil filler to check the PCV system.

Check down the back of the block for oil. If the PCV is blocked it could be leaking oil across the top of the head and it will leak down the back onto te exhaust manifold.

Hey everybody

Sorry about being a little late with my update.

I finally got to do a little digging in the engine bay today, and here's what I found.

First I did the glove test and it stayed flat. I guess all is fine with my PCV.

Next a I I jacked the car up to look at the turbo. I found the the compressor side of the turbo covered in oil (the other side was dry). I took the intake tube and the charge pipe off the turbo and found a little oil in the charge pipe and its couplers.

So i guess my question to you guys is what does this mean?

The small amount of oil in the charge pipe is typical/normal. check the oil feed line to the turbo, the o-ring may have failed. Also, check the oil drain back tube, same story. I think they are the more likely to fail than the inlet. Also, due to location, check the rear exhaust cam seal and the top of cam cover PCV tube. And did you check the oil cap seal?
