Idle tensioner

Post by loveMy850 »

I am not happy.when I went to a shop and had my cam seals and water pump replaced , he replaced my brand new volvo serpentine belt.for no reason!!! Hummm. and didn't tell me! the belt he put on was cheesy and was way too tight, OH I KNOW TRUST ME I KNOW.!😡 and it's destroyed my pulley and I'm pretty sure my tensioner spring. I have to replace it. I'm having rough idling and the tensioner is bouncing with a terrible noise and if my timing is off can can I go ahead and replace the idle tensioner and pulley without having the timing checked? There is no one in my town that will touch volvos and the one who did well I already said. But the idle tensioner is so bad I hate driving it until I replace it.
It's only the 2 bolts by the power steering and the pin right. My Haynes doesn't tell. I need my car.... Thank you please. Then I hope I can find some one to check my timing, heck it may not be out of time but I need to put a new tensioner and pulley on. It's all one piece for my 1994 volvo 850.

Serpentine belt tensioner have nothing to do with timing belt.
It is held with 2 bolts,BUT you need to remove the tension first and slide the serpentine belt from tensioner pulley before you undo those two bolts.

You will need to make a tool for serpentine belt tensioner arm.

The serpentine belt and the timing belt are completely separate , so you don’t have to worry about the timing

I recently put on a Conti Belt ona 1998 and it was so tight the tensioner wasn’t needed. Something going on there

It's a child game. You have to replace the serpentine belt and the tensioned. There are severals videos on the web that explains the operation. A couple of tools needed.

There have been some recent reports here of belts that don't fit as intended....
For example:

Yeah I switched it out yesterday, I knew this was going to be a cake walk. It's not making all the noise the pulley was toast and I think probably the tensioner spring was bad where all the noise was. I pulled one out of the JY a few months ago. Finally got to it! Thanks guys

Like manovlov says, indicate solved, and good luck finding a competent Volvo Mechanic, or better yet, in BECOMING one!
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
