While doing the PCV cleaning on my 2000 V70 NA, I found the intake manifold caked with black deposits. I plan to spray each port with carb cleaner and brush them out with a wide pipe cleaner. Is there any problem with that or better method I could use?
Here's a good explanation of manifold buildup. One user took his intake for professional cleaning, but I can't drive with the car apart.
Also, does a 2000 have an EGR? This EGR clean DIY by MadeInJapan makes me think I should clean this while my PCV is apart. Is this where the corrugated metal pipe connects the intake manifold and... where else?

Carb cleaner will cut these deposits. A stiff brush (brass or nylon) will work better than a pipe cleaner. You will have to do some scrubbing. You can also clean the outside for improved appearance with alcohol and tooth paste (yes really). The tooth paste acts as a polishing compound to shine up the aluminum.

Go to the Dollar Tree and get some cans of Oven Cleaner. Use it like you would on a filthy oven. Oven Cleaner will even cut the baked on deposits.

Alcohol for general cleaning and removing the factory coating on the aluminum. At least I think that was a factory coating on my manifold that had turned yellow and was mostly pealed off.
The tooth paste is used separately for polishing after the surface is cleaned. The tooth paste will also do some cleaning. Brush it on with a tooth brush and scrub until it looks better then rinse with clear water. It really makes the manifold look better without great effort.

Modern oven cleaners are not pure lye anymore, but still pretty user-unfriendly. I would say keep it off the outside, it could get splotchy.
"Barkeepers Friend" is made for stainless, so it's pretty agressive, but cleans up aluminum too.

Thanks. My entire engine block is covered in slight white scale. No yellow. I'll try some rubbing alcohol on it first, then some toothpaste. Yes, I've got some good long cleaning gloves and eye protection. The annoying part is trying to catch all the liquid run off for proper disposal. The liquid will be a mix of so many cleaners, I can't imagine how the hazardous waste collection company will properly deal with it.

Barkeepers Friend is good stuff, I use it. But you can fill the manifold with the Oven cleaner foam and get the manifold clean inside and out.
You guys got the safety glasses and protective clothing parts but you forgot well-ventilated.
If One does not want to mess with any chemicals, One could take it to a Machine shop or a Garage and have them run it through their solvent tank.
