P2 xc90 2.5T 2006
I replaced the exhaust vvt because of a lot of walking of the t-belt during operation as well as poor performance. I am having a very difficult time trying to mount the timing belt correctly, The exhaust cam is extremely easy to spin when trying to align the t-belt on to the various timing marks(this is NOT the movement built into the hub). After attempting this procedure I have to go to the back side of the engine and realign the exhaust cam. My question is: Leaving the crank lined up on it's mark and the timing belt off will I cause any damage by turning just the exhaust cam 2 rotations? What i am hoping this will do is allow the exhaust cam to reset so there is some more tension on the cam so it doesn't spin so easily. Any replies greatly appreciated.

No you will not, I once installed the intake or camshaft 180 degrees off from its correct position and had to do just that, however you usually need the cam locking tool to align everything correctly.

With the crank on the mark, you can spin the cams freely however you want. Just make sure everything is right again before you put the belt on.
I agree, you need the cam locking tools to do this job.
Sometihnhg like this, but of course there are all levels of quality (and price) available: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... s-cta-2864

Thank you dikidera and erikv11 very much....this is what i was hoping. I already have the CTA locking tool and have plenty of experience using it.....unfortunatly from constantly using it after the exhaust cam has been spinning on me

With those cam locking tools, especially the cheap ones, just put those M6 long bolts in finger tight. They dont take any force (the lugs on the tool do)
THe bolts on some of these are silver cheese and will snap off in the cam, leaving a mess to deal with

Based on those reports, first thing I did was buy real (new) bolts for the tool. Good advice.
