Why the XC90 Cigarette Lighter Blows Fuses

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

Why the XC90 Cigarette Lighter Blows Fuses

Post by MagnumPi » Sun Sep 17, 2017 8:39 pm

I posted this as a statement but its actually a question. This seems to be a very common problem with the XC90. My year is a 2009. I have removed the panel with the radio and installed a brand new Aux Power Point/Cigarette lighter. Two purple wires soldered into a new power point unit. It is not the fault of a bad cable being plugged into the socket nor is there a penny or any other item stuck in the socket. It is new. The rear socket in back works fine. But the front and middle seats power sockets blow the 15 amp fuse constantly. If I unplug the battery and take radio out and jiggle wires and put it back together it will work for a little while then BAM blows a fuse. WHY ?!! The large purple wires in the dash look just fine . If nobody can give me a good answer I am going to hard-wire my very own wires to the battery with my own fuse to stop this madness. Thought I would check here in this forum first. There are many questions on the internet on this very problem yet no answers. If anybody has a clue I would be more than grateful !

Could have a look at the wiring diagram http://www.volvowiringdiagrams.com , might even be helpful for troubleshooting and in the odd event you decide to re-wire" the sockets directly to the battery. Would be interested to understand what drove the socket replacement in the first place, was the short there before replacement or only after?

Good luck !

** Noted added: Not sure how this gets to be a "common" problem, have two XC90s (12 years and going on my '05) and never come across this issue. Ever. **

What size fuse, what are you powering? The only time I blew a fuse was trying to run an inverter. Oooops
