just purchased 05XC90 2.5, 230xxx Topic is solved

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

just purchased 05XC90 2.5, 230xxx

Post by aaron1611 »

SO, pretty excited about my latest purchase, a 05 XC90 2.5 with 230K. It was a 1 owner vehicle with early dealership maintenance records but nothing for the last 80K. I bought it at auction so I can't reach out to the PO but what are some of the important items that I should be looking at? PCV probably needs attention. It has some rattles on the rear passenger side. It drives great and it was well cared for but I haven't dug into it with VIDA DICE yet.. it does have the P0089 code and I have to replace the siren module and my headliner has fallen but that's about it. It's got new tires, brakes, new inspection and it's a perfect truck for my wife to drive. I see no reason why this can't be a great daily driver for the next few years.

So, in doing the homework on which used XC90 to buy I didn't see the fuel issue that I inherited, mostly it was all bout avoiding the T6 & V8 transmissions etc. well, I decided to take a 100 mile roundtrip drive today and sure enough I experienced all the same issues that SHOCKWAVE posted awhile back. Several stutters at different speeds, with different amounts of gas in the tank all happening while trying to accelerate aggressively. Seemed to me that if I gradually tried to accelerate it was fine but that too went away towards the end of my drive and finally it went into limp home mode and stalled out on the expressway but I simply coasted in neutral turned the engine off and restarted it and made it home without further incident. I picked up a new fuel filter as well as a new FPS. I hope to find time this weekend to install them both. I'm still loving the XC90 but this put a damper on my weekend plans though.

Don't forget to release the fuel pressure and to install the FPS with a cold engine, it will leak about 1oz gasoline. Also use Vaseline smear on the gasket. The PEM could the the second culprit

May as well check the alternator with a multimeter

I was planning on looking at the PEM too. I hadn’t thought about checking the alt but will do that as well. Given the amount of mileage should I remove and soak injectors?

There could be any number of things with age and miles.
I've lived through your conditions resulted in frequent engine cutoff. Start with replacing alternator, and then Volvo spark plugs, and coils.

so real quick update. oil change, changed plugs, coils, fuel filter, FPS, cleared codes and no P0089, only UEM 0004 for siren module. Took for test drive and it drove great! coming off highway and it stumbled again like before. NO CEL but I pulled codes and these are all NEW!
120D air mass-signal too low
121B Mass air flow sensor-flow too low
2900 Fuel pressure-faulty signal
290D Fuel pressure-signal too low
439C fuel tank system, leakage Major leak

SO no leaks, fuel filter installed in the right direction. checked PEM connection, looks good. Erased all codes, test drive again, stumbles again. pulled codes:
2900 fuel pressure
290D fuel pressure

erased all codes, test drive again, stumbles again, pulled codes:
120D-air mass
VIDA DICE tells me that the Values for fuel pressure match the nominal pressure, 401.46 kPa

erased all codes, test drive again, no stumble, no codes

Heading out of town for a week, comments welcomed but will start new thread if codes come back again. Will plan on removing PEM opening it up and if there's corrosion, if so I'll replace it. Thanks for your input

It's not easy to open the PEM, because it won't fully split: the cooling plate is welded to the printed board which is screwed on the second half of the box. As for the tabs, just pry open each of them one by one without pulling on the cover. Does the cooling plate look corroded in one corner? As for the PEM there are plenty used on Ebay, all will work on your car, just look for one with a clean cooling plate. The PEM also has a date on it, just under the 'Made in Germany'

Injectors should be the last thing, soaking them won't help - by any means no acetone or lacquer thinner for this, only some SeaFoam or Carburetor cleaner (see Youtube videos)

I’ve been out of town for work but a quick follow up. Still getting both 290D & 2900 codes. Hooked up Vida but I can’t diagnose if it’s the fuel pump or PEM. Fuel pressure remains good and the fuel pump duty cycle seems to be pretty consistent at the low 50’s at idle and cruising speeds. Accelerate and it’s high range is 87 and when I let off the accelerator it dips to as low as 27 but always moves back to low 50’s. I’ll admit that I’m a novice with Vida Dice but from reading all the forums I don’t know how to decide which part to purchase.

Fuel pump swap - this member is offering it for free. May be worth sending him a PM: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=87375

Siren may be fixable - need to open it to see if battery leaked on circuit board. If it is good you can put in new batteries.

How much trouble shooting have you done on the MAF? Have you tried cleaning it?

Have you checked all your hoses and piping for leaks? Turbo has some known hoses that go bad.

I would add changing tranny fluid unless it shows it is clean.
