2006 XC90 2.5 FWD-front drivers side growl

Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo XC90s. The XC90 proved to be very popular, and very good for Volvo's sales numbers, since its introduction in model year 2003 (North America).

Side to Side: most likely Tie Rod Ends. Look for the play as somebody wiggles the tire side to side.

I don't see uneven wear on the new tires but would that play over time create uneven wear? I fly out this morning for the week for work and won't be able to work on the truck until the weekend. will order the engine mounts today to install on the weekend.

I would suggest you check the transmission oil. Here it is a catch 22 - although only a small one. My concern is that you may have metal shavings in the transmission oil pan and you want to eliminate the transmission as the source of the growl. If the oil is good and clean draining and filling could be a waste of good oil. If it is dirty I would just do a drain and fill to eliminate the transmission as a source of the growl and as proper maintenance. If the magnet and what pours out is devoid of any alarming material I think you are good. If the fluid has not been changed you will find some muddy metal particles on the drain plug magnet. If in doubt take a picture and post it. Regardless doing a drain and fill of clean good oil will not hurt anything but your wallet - if you use Toyota fluid about $8 quart - four quarts should do it. Plenty of write ups as I believe your 2.5T uses the AW 50/51 which is typical of most 2000-2006 Volvos. Double check. If the oil has never been done - this is bonus maintenance.

Oil was last changed 7500 miles ago and was pretty brown so I changed it. Tranny fluid looks good. I recently did the drain and fill flush on my v70 using about 12 quarts to get it all flushed. Used mobile 1.

so,, I installed new engine torque mounts and it made zero difference but I'm now feeling vibration that matches the sound with my left foot against the floor/wheel well. New hub/wheel bearings is now my next thought or direction. Seems to be getting louder too.

update. so the car has been making a whirring hum sound at highway speeds over 60 and I swore it must be the wheel bearing/hub but switched it out for a new one and not only did it not fix the sound it made it more pronounced. At this point I'm at a loss and do not want to throw any more parts at it without understanding what else could be making this noise. All sounds increase in pitch and volume when under load and it's not so much an issue when I'm coasting after accelerating. I'm afraid to drive it now in fear that I'm doing more damage. Alignment is out so I've got to get that done but any ideas? Really bummed about it after thinking I had it figured out. Thanks.

I have the same issue with my 2005 XC90 2.5T, whining noise at 30-40 mph, especially during deceleration.

Brought it to Volvo dealer, lifted it on the lift. One person in the car runs the engine, another mechanic underneath with a stethoscope listening to the angle gear area, sure enough, it was a stripped angle gear sleeve.
The cost for the diagnosis was $35.

The estimate to repair is $1500 (removing angle gear, replace the sleeve, reseal the 2 halves of the angle gear, well-documented in different forum DIYs).

I elected to leave it alone as I don't need AWD. I simple install winter tires and my car is now functioning like a FWD vehicle.

I guess I can have them check it out when the alignment is done but mine is FWD only, does this still apply?

Oh...

FWD model has no sleeve.
So if your FWD car has 120K and whining noise LF side, it is likely bad wheel bearing.
Just keep driving locally and listen to the noise.
Wheel bearing noise usually gets worse with time.

If you decide to replace the bearings, then replace in pair.
I think SKF is OEM and is about $155/each.

175K, replaced the bearing today and now the sounds are louder. Did the whole steering slalom test and thought for sure it was the drivers side but it's possible that it's the RH but I'm not dropping another wheel bearing without confirmation.
