Excessive axial play with the exhaust hub was my issue a number of years ago, resolved by hub replacement after the newly replaced front seal started to leak. Oddly enough, my problem occurred at 142k miles and after a full PCV replacement at 110k.
Nice visuals cn90 (and original posters), makes it way more obvious when discussing the front leak.

Hi @ggleavitt,
Re GREEN O-ring inside the VVT hub, did you replace it?
I'd like to replace it but cannot find info on the aftermarket O-ring sold by FCPEuro.
I am concerned that by replacing the factory O-ring with no issues, I turn it into an issue bc the aftermarket O-ring may go bad in a few thousand miles...
Most people report no issues with GREEN O-ring until the VVT goes bad (the gearing mechanisms) at 150K, when they replace the whole thing for $250/each.

At the time (2014) there was a mention of an o-ring but no part number that I could ever find There was some discussion on rebuilding the internals as well but the VVT hub halves on my vehicle are riveted together so that seemed way more trouble than it was worth. I had a very reasonable amount of in/out play on my hub, was quite obvious once the new and old were together. And my issue was exhaust hub only, intake hardly had any play. I bought both at the time but only exhaust came overnight and since I wanted the vehicle back on the road, intake never got replaced. I also did not replace the rear seals, both were (and still are @ 200k) dry. Have parts (Corteco) around if they ever start seeping.
I'll look around some more for the o-ring information, couple folks on Ebay seem to be selling them so looks like they're available.
