hi im new to this web site but i have been using it for a while and i really appreciate the people that took thier time organize such a helpfull web site
my name is ali and i live in canada i own a 1999 s80 with 120000 miles on it, when i first bought it the car only had an engine serivce reqired message but now it has all kind of creative yet irretating messages.
it all started when one day i was driving my car and all i see is the STC, ABS and brake light come on and in the message box i had "brake failuer stop the car asap" along with the spedo going to "0" along with the rpm so i stoped the car turned it off and then on again and the message went a way so i called the pervouse owner of the car to ask him if he ever encountered such problem and told me that he had and he had to replace the abs modual back in 2001 and that he paid 1200 for it. couple of days later the same thing happen but this time the lights were one before i even start the car and it will not let me start the car so i called my mechanique and asked him what to do he was like disconnect the battery for 5 min so i did and the car started fine the problem started to happen on different occasions and as a result i would disconnect the battery to solve the problem temparaly but one day when i did that i had a new message saying that "transmission fix next service" so i was worried that i burned a senscer by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery so i did research and found on your web side how to rebuild the abs module by resoudering the board so i took it out and opened it and resoudered as the instructions on the web side said (i belive that it was under" how to repair abs module") after that i installed it back in the car and every thing was fine until 2 days later the car had the abs light back on with the stc and the brake light and the message that tells me that thier is a brake failure so i turned off the car and back on and it was fine then i was driving on the highway a day later and had the cruse control on and all of sudden the same lights and message come again and the cruse turns off so i stoped the car and turned it off but the car didnt want to turn on again so i disconnected the battery and it was fine
can any body please help me know what is this problem not a single mechanice in detroit or even windsor ontario knows how to fix it i just want to know what is wrong
thanks and hope to hear the solution soon
STC, ABS, brake light, transmission fix soon

no i have not with an actual volvo computer but i tried to do so with a regular car scanner but nothing it was not able to read any codes on the car i tried to delete all frozen frames but nothing it didnt take a away the transmition message but i took away the service engine soon message for like 2 hours and then it comes back essepically if you keep turning on and off the car the message will reappear but the other day i was looking up the abs modual part on car-parts.com and when you go to the antilock brake computer and a new page comes up telling me which computer i want:
Anti-Lock Brake Computer
-ABS, mtd on ABS unit, w/o stability trac cont; w/dynamic stability trac cont
-Air Bag, (center floor console)
-Transmission, (right front corner eng comp)
-ABS, mtd on ABS unit, w/o stability trac cont; w/o dynamic stability trac cont
-ABS, mtd on ABS unit, w/stability trac cont
Cruise Cont
-Seat, (under drivers seat)
-ABS, left side dash
so i was thinking since i have the message for the transmisson come up while the abs problem was on then it might be the 3rd option for the computer that is damaged "Transmission, (right front corner eng comp)" but im just guessing so i was hoping if somone had the same problem as me tell me waht they did or even somone that knows what is goign on to tell me becouse it is 250$ to run a dignositic here and i dont have a volvo dealer ship so im going to do it at a local mechanice and since he is the only one with the computer he charges high prices

The service engine soon message is probably just telling you that you need an oil change. Go to the sticky at the top of this forum if you need directions on how to do it. Here's how to reset the message: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?p=50879
For less than $250 you can buy your own code reader that will read Volvo codes and use it for the rest of your life.
You probably don't need a new ABS computer - you probably just need to send the module to someone like Victor Rocha to get it resoldered or do it yourself.
For the trans, you can try the fluid and filter change, also in a sticky at the top of this forum.

Also really helps to be able to clear all the codes. The ones that don't come back right away could be incidental. An ETM software fault can cause a tranny service message, for example. If the tranny message comes back right away though then it's probably on the verge of blowing up.
well thank you for telling me that is going to blow up that is going to make my mechanice wealthy and happy at the same time but acctually the transsmition shifts fine and smoothly the other day my low beam stoped working so i turned of the car and then back on and i see the service light along with 3 flashes of the battery and like 4 other lights including the stc abs and brake light so i unhooked the battey and hooked it back on and every thing went away but the transsmistion fix next serivce message didnt go it was the only one and my low beam started working again so im guessing the problem could be with one of the computers becouse when the thing happend with me i grabbed a volt meter and messured the voltage in the fuse box that is located on the dashboard on the drivers side on the side next to the door and thier was no voltage to the light but when i oped the hood and messured voltage under the hood it was like 11.96 which is not soo good but thier was voltage so im guessing that it might be a problem with the ecm that is located at the foot well of the driver any help will greatly be appreciated

Disconnecting battery resets the CAN (controller area network). Any module freaking out can cause that. You need a Volvo-specific diag tool like http://www.ppc-diagnostic.com to clear the tranny code. So you don't really know if it'll come back or not, and therefore can't draw a conclusion yet. But I'd say it's safe to assume something connected to the network somewhere is causing a problem (for all that's worth, lol).

In my case I had a short in the DDM (driver's door module) and the siren serially connected to the UEM (upper electronic module). I haven't had to disconnect my battery since replacing both. $350 for DDM and $170 for siren. Labor was free though and neither required programming by the stealership.
My tranny code was actually unrelated. I had a plugged oil trap that was puking sludge up into the intake manifold. Every time the engine choked on that crap the ETM (throttle module) and TCM (tranny computer) would freak out and ECM (engine control module) would put car into limp home mode. I flushed tranny fluid, cleaned oil trap, replaced a warped oil cap. six oil soaked coils and six fouled plugs to solve that once and for all -- Whoever said only use synthetic in these cars was right. I've got Mobile 1 in my engine and tranny now.
Anywho, I guess point is I never would have figured out what was wrong without my $200 BSR PPC and I might have wasted $3000 rebuilding a tranny that was perfectly fine.

Oh, forgot I also replaced upper and lower torque rods which really helped hook all the power up and stop the tranny from hard shifting.
Anywho, way too much info I'm sure, LOL.... let us know how yours works out.

I'm having the exact same or similar issue: "transmission fix soon" message. Then every so often "brake failure stop the car asap", ABS lights, come on and car won't start. Disconnect battery, all messages go away but "transmission fix soon" message stays.
After reading other's posts, it looks like these issues might be related. Anyone know a solution? Thanks in advance.

Can you tell if the car is shifting through all four gears? Are you getting any codes?
