S80 T6 '99 Down on power, but only a post O2 code

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 T6 '99 Down on power, but only a post O2 code

Post by boosted5cyl »

Hi guys, picked up this car yesterday and it is acting a bit strange. When I first test drove it (Sat eve), it had a misfire. Seller sent it away to have it fixed, seems it was a failed coil on cyl5.

Anyway, here's some of the symptoms I'm seeing now.
*Random erratic idle, sometimes a little erratic, sometimes very.
*No peformance after approx 50% throttle, it just chokes at 3/4-full. Tranny shifts down fine and then zilch, nada. Back off to half throttle and it starts to go again.
*Occasional odor of crankcase cases in the cabin.
*emissions service warning.
*occasional "stop safely and restart" message.

Only code in memory is P0051 whic seems to be the post cat O2 for cyls 1-3.

Any ideas on where to start with this? Its going back to the seller's mechanic whos going to take another look at it.

I'd start with changing the post O2 sensor.

Then change the spark plugs.

WRT the irratic idle, does the ETM have the yellow sticker on it? If not, I'd say your ETM is bad. Go with the XeModex since the car is past the extended warranty.

How old is the fuel? If the car sat for a while, the gas might be bad. I'd try a tank of premium gas (that's all I run in mine). If the ECU detects knocking in the cylinders it will back off the ignition timing and the power goes to hell.

If you still have the problem, try changing the fuel filter.

VACUUM LEAK. Have a look around before you change the O2 sensor. At least on the -70 series, it will often code a bad O2 sensor under false pretenses when there is a vacuum leak.

Something's choking it when the turbo(s) are boosting heavily. Stuck wastegate? Could also be vacuum-related.

And of course the classic PCV system

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winnner......

I put some 91 in it on the way home from work today, then putup my original post. After that I headed to the dealer. Got halfway to the dealer, got on the gas (I swear to god at the same time I read the quoted post in traffic) and WHAMMO! T6 powahhhhh! The idle is still a little lumpy, but I can live with that for a while.

Haven't checked the ETM. To be honest I just assumed the recall was done give how old it is, but I will check to be certain.

I'll leave the post cat O2 as it is for now as it has no bearing on peformance. I think the timing belt & tensioners along with the oil pan orings and PCV system need to be tended to first. As well as a new filter and a few quarts of Dexron VI for the tranny. Touch wood its shifting real nice, so hopefully someone else already had some work done on it.

Thanks for chiming in everyone..

Not off to a good start with this car....

Last night it started behaving as if it jumped out of gear when going around tight left turns, so I'm guessing thats a final drive issue? I have a huge-ass oil leak which appears to be at the front of the engine between it and the radiator. Hopefully a pcv pipe came loose or something like that.

So I've been scratching my head and im beginning to think I should rename this car Captain Obvious. I haven't checked the tranny fluid level, so hopefully my "slip out of gear" issue on left turns is just low fluid.

ETM has a yellow sticker on it, so looks like that recall was done.

Can anyone tell me more about:
TSB 2280011 INFORMATION REGARDING LONG CRANKING/TACH JUMPING/MISFIRE DTC. ( NHTSA ITEM NUMBER - 626912 )
Google didnt tell me a whole lot more than whats quoted above. Noticed my tacho going nuts when cranking from time to time...

OK think I dodged a bullet with the tranny. The fluid Level wasnt even on the dipstick, luckily the fluid that splashed onto the dipstick was in good condition.

I added a quart of Valvoline Dexron VI, the level is up to the very end of the dipstick and the slipping on left turns thing is gone. Begs the question where the quart+ that was missing went I guess, but ill see how much it looses over the next week before I start worrying too much.

Put 2.5 quarts of oil in the motor and same thing, just getting to the bottom of the dipstick. Ill fill it to the mark and see how much it gobbles between now and tomorrow. Havent had time to check the PCV stuff on the front yet.

Have to say I'm liking this car. Its good stuff effortlessly cruising along the highway seated in my comfy heated leather seat listening to Miles Davis and Slayer.

OK, I'm gonna be nice. Did you check the fluids when you bought the car?

LOL, thats a fair question. I checked all the fluids, with the exception of the tranny when I first viewed it on Sat. TBH I couldnt find the damn dipstick for the tranny and I was done looking at cars and it was getting hard to be objective.

Anyway, 2 quarts have gone into the tranny now, still not in the hatch area though!!! I had a oh s*it moment, my wife drove it when we added 1.5 quarts, on the freeway when we got to around 55-60 the SES light started flashing and it seemed like the torque converter wasnt locking up. On the way back it was fine however.

So you checked the engine oil when you looked at the car and it was fine, then the last time you looked you had to add 2.5 quarts?
