Hi. I'm a new member. I've got a 1991 440 LE with a B18 KP 111 engine. The cooling fan is not switching off when it should do. It appears from the Haynes manual that it is controlled by a timer relay that in turn is controlled by the engine temperature sender. I can't find the timer relay. Does anyone out there know where it is?.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: 440 LE 1991 - Cooling fan doesn't switch off
Hi!
I'm having same problem on my 460 GLE 1995 with 1,8i engine.
The fan continues working with cold engine. Any ideas?
Siim

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
This is the only information I can find for a cooling relay for the 440.
Bill.

So there isn't such a thing like cooling fan timer relay? Or is there any other place than this to find relays?

Re: 440 LE 1991 - Cooling fan doesn't switch off
I am not aware of any car having a cooling fan timer. The fan is switched on by the engine control unit when the temperature reaches the prescribed limit. When the temperature falls to an acceptable level the ECU switches the fan off. This is done by activating and de-activating the fan relay. On cars with air conditioning the fan will switch on if the AC is switched on to assist with cooling the condenser which is mounted in front of the radiator. In this case the fan will remain on as long as the AC is on.
There are other relays listed for the 440 but none to do with the cooling fan.
Bill.

Re: 440 LE 1991 - Cooling fan doesn't switch off
The fan is controlled electricaly by a temeperature switch located in the left center side of the radiator. It is cheap - replace it.

It stays in the whole marked az M20x1.5 in the picture above and looks like the picture below (the plug may not be exactly the same, depending the model used in your car):

And it has 3 wires: "+"; "low fan speed" and "height fan speed". The "+" is awways connected to the battery (through fuse in the fusebox), the other two are dirrectly connected to the fan
Other reason not to stop the fan is short near that switch or near the fan plug.
Third reason mentined abowe "locked" relley. I don't remeber but I think there was no relley for that... Idea: the releys are not so much... while fan is working when it shouldn't just unplug all the relleys one by one until it stop. This way you could locate whether the problem is that (I don't think so...)
Good luck.
