I have a question I bet someone has already had to deal with. From time to time (about once every month or so), my wife, who drives the car, tells me that she has a hard time restarting the car after she runs to the grocery store (or elsewhere) and then gets back in the car to come home. It starts fine, but does not go to idle. The car dies quickly. Restarting takes some time and requires maintaining a, higher than normal idle RPM. Sometimes, it takes a minute and only 1 or 2 restarts, but other times, it takes 3 or 4 or 5 minutes with many restarts. Since it usually happens when she is driving the car, I don't have many other details. Once the gar gets "back to normal", it seems to run fine and this will not happen again for some period of time.

Any ideas?

I have a 740 that did that. It would work sometimes and then not work. Bring it into the shop, they tell me nothing is wrong with it, take it home, the next day im coming out of the mall doesn't start, they tow it to the shop and it starts right up. This goes on for 6 or 7 months, dropped over a grand into the thing. Finally some guy comes out of the shop and tells me he definatly found out what the problem was. He said it was the RPM cable, a 10 dollar cable that he replaced on the house for spending only $1000 and getting stranded a bunch of times. I would have been pissed except it was my uncle's garage so i knew they weren't purposly screwing me. Anyway, I just bought a 92 240. Car is about as mint as those little candies they give in resturaunts with the bill. Good luck!

tell her to be careful not to touch the gas when starting the car. This can confuse the fuel injection and flood the car. Check the grounds for voltage drop and the coolant temperature sensor for proper operation

I had an 1985 Volvo 240 Wagon that did the same. It would drive fine for a while then begin to stall and sputter. The dealer swore he couldn't find the problem. It turned out to be a small white 2" relay circuit box. The box is an electical connection that operates the fuel pump in the fuel tank. Our box was heating up and the circuit became unstable. When it cooled down, it worked just fine. We have this relay replaced and never had the problem again.
