How could one tell if his gas gauge is faulty?

There is more than one way to skin a cat. If you know the color of the wire coming from the sender in the tank you can measure the voltage of that wire when the car is runnig. I think I remember 7.6v with a full tank. It will obviously vary with how full the tank is.

Another way would be to put a 2 gal gas can in your trunk and drive it till you are empty. If gage is on empty it is working if it says you have 1/2 tank it is bad.

When it says 1/4 tank you can fill up and see how many gals it takes. Your owners manual will tell you how many gals it holds. Gages aren't exactly known for being accurate though, so if it is close you are ok. I am not sure I have answered your question.
