87 740 idles fine but stalls when put in drive

Post by guest »

I have an 87 Volvo 740 sedan. It randomly decided to stall one day when I stepped in the gas after stopping at a light. Now the car will start and idle smoothly, but as soon as it is put in drive or you step on the gas it will stall. I've tried a bunch of stuff. Fuel pump seems to be working, fuel filter replaced, spark plugs were black and thus replaced. It seems to me as though the car is getting too much fuel or not enough air. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Check your timing belt. If it is one tooth off it will do as you describe. In order for it to jump a tooth I would think your timing belt would have to be very loose or missing a tooth.

Also with the car off but the key on measure the voltage on your throttle position sensor. It should raise smoothly as you open the throttle (with an analog "needle type" volt ohm meter) .5v idle to 4.5v wot
