Low Revs for 240 DL 1984 Topic is solved

My 1984 240 DL will not rev any higher than 2000rpm i have replaced the points and fuel filter. When i exam the carb, the damper is in the closed position, and when i removed the carb cover the diaphram had 3/4 of it missing. I live in calgary alberta (very cold) and my car worked fine in the morning and by night it was runnning improperly. Does this seem as though it might be the problem as i am at the end of my rope financially. The carb is a solex 175 CD.

I hope there is some reassuring responses so i can get this beast back on the road.

Hi Michael.

I also live in Calgary, my recommondation is to get rid of your Solex carb and install an SU, there are usually lots of 200 series Volvo's at Pick-Your-Part, most with the SU carb and it will cost you less than $20. The SU is far more reliable and easier to tune in our climate. There is no diaphram in the SU, they use an aluminum piston that is far more stable.

Hi Michael,

If the diaphram is broken, the car is acting exactly as you describe. Buy a new one! It is a rather common problem, so I recomend owners of older Volvo's to change the diaphram at leas evere 10:th year. Be happy that it happened at home.

the car runs like a dream, the only thing that is important to note with this carb. is that only a small amount of tran. fluid is needed in the damper assemble, or else there is too much pressure and it will not move.

thankyou for all your help i will check back at this site now from time to time for it has a lot of great people that have a plethora of knowledge when combined.
