How do I install 960 air guide?

Post by ProjectT-5R »

So my, new to me, 960 wagon was missing it's front lower lip and air guide, as so many are. I got all the parts from the dealer. For the air guide I got the guide 9178162, three 6846295 spacers, and 3 screws. I have spent an hour under the car trying to install this thing and I am at a loss.

The front tucks into the front bumper cover, but at the rear with the three spacers and three screws, there is nothing to attach to. It aligns to the bottom of radiator and the screws go straight up. There are no holes that the screws align to. If I were to just try to screw them into what they "hit" I would pierce the radiator. Am I missing a part here? (I check parts break downs for the radiator, the bumper, and the air guide and I don't see anything)

Anyone with knowledge of this mounting, I would really appreciate some insight.

Those screws go into the radiator. I recall the rad having panel nuts slipped over the holes. I think some rads just have holes and the screws self-tap. Is the rad original?

Thanks for the input.

That seems right but I see/have no holes. Pretty sure if I try to "self tap" the first thing I will hit is the lowest rad. tube. The car is new to me so no way for me to know if the radiator is original. Based on the age, a safe guess it is not original. If that is where is it supposed to attach I will just have to craft something. I was really hoping I was missing an intermediate part so I wouldn't have to jerry rig it

I have a 1996 960. On mine the front of the air guide is attached to the inside of the lower lip with the spring clips. The rear of the air guide has three slots. These mate up to three rotatable plastic spacers that are attached to the rear radiator support with short screws. To install the air guide, the screws are loosened enough to rotate the spacers so the they can extend through the slot. Then the spacers are rotated 90 degrees (so the slot and spacer are no longer aligned) and the screw snugged up to keep the spacers from rotating. Sounds like you are missing the spacers.
Volvo calls the part number 6846295 for air guide 9178162.
