Hey all,

I have an 84 volvo 244 non-turbo. A few days ago i went to turn the keys and got nothing. No crank, no start. I checked the relays, the fuses, battery, everything is fine with all of that. I started playing around w/ the starter wiring to check for corrosion, and while there wasn't much after fiddling with the starter wires the car would start, a few times. but the starting is intermittent and i noticed a fairly frayed wire running off the starter with no housing. It is connected to the yellow/green wire that i believe runs to the ignition(?) I believe this wire is my starting issue but I can't find any info as to where this wire leads to replace it? It appears to lead under the manifold from the starter.

Also, if this helps. In my playing around with this wiring, at times the fuel pump relays would buzz and then the car would either start/ or not. But last night it started fine w/ no buzz. Today, no crank, no start.

Any thoughts?

can you clarify that a bit? the battery terminal screw to the starter connection?

Yes, if you short the large starter terminal to the small starter terminal that will force the starter to crank. It verifies your starter and large starter cable is good.

Assuming that works, you need to look at the smaller starter terminal wire (starter solenoid terminal). I expect this is the one that looks like it is fraying. There should be 12V between this terminal and engine ground when key is in position 3.

I don't recall the exact signal path for this wire, but all of the wiring diagrams are online (try volvotips.com). Generally, it goes something like battery, fuse, ignition switch, relay, PNP and then to the starter.
