Need information about the 740, 760

Post by CIK7 »

I dont even know what to ask for exactly. I am interested in the lineup of 740 and 760 wagon models. I know theres a turbo for both. I like the US pre-facelift 700. Not teh V6 though. Can yall share your thoughts on both? What are y'all's experiences? What reasons should I use to consider one of those rather than another 960 or a p80 wagon? Can yall provide pics of interior, engine bay, and underneath? Is the oil pan easily accessible on these two? Not on the 960 for sure.
I will admit I am all over the place right now because I am not dead set on any 1 Volvo model. I don't care for the P2 lineup after my 01 v70 base experience. I am not interested in the shocking amount of electronics either. I use to be set on P80s (a wagon with turbo spool and AWD?), but then I got my 960. My 960 is the best car I have ever had.

I recently sold the '91 740 I had for 10 years. Thinking back now it was the best car I've owned. I keep records on all my cars and it was by far the cheapest ride I've spent for the miles and years I kept it around. Replacing both fuel pumps was the largest expense.

Got it with 120k and sold at 220k.
Always started and could drive it anywhere. 1 very reliable car and if it had been a turbo car I'd still have it over the 960.

Start with a decent model. Stay away from a beat car. You'll never like it. On a plus side the 740 can be retrofitted with power 960 seats. Don't forget about the 940 turbo. Another wonderful car.

Is the 740 or 940 more luxurious? Is it more expensive to fix the 940? Which has better handling? You are referring to wagons right?

The 900 series was the replacement for the 700 series. My first Volvo was a 740 turbo. I loved it! There were all sorts of variations made. Personally I would set the 940 SE as the pinnacle of the four cylinder turbos. Because SE stands for Special Equipment. This model includes a Garrett Turbo rather than the standard Mitsubishi turbo on the others. Also SE cars also tend to be top of the line with the extras. June

The 940 is simply an updated 740. Pretty much the same car, suspension and all.
Look for a '95. The last year of the legendary red block in the US. And 940's now seem to be in better shape.
I love them all, but stay away from mid to late 80's. Mainly due to the engine wiring harnesses.
And if not in excellent condition most likely multiple owners.

I buy my cars from individuals. After I'm satisfied I feel they were an involved Previous owner. Maintenance records a big plus.

Can the pre-facelift 740 items be added to the 940? I love the pre-facelift double rectangle headlights with the bottom lip. Can the oil pan be easily dropped if necessary? The 960 subframe has to be dropped before oil pan work. Can the O2 sensors be changed easily? The 960 o2 sensors are recessed, difficult to get wrench in the recession. I know they have 2 less cylinders but is the 740/940 engine bay bigger than the 960? I heard the 960 engine bay was reduced compared to 740. I would not want the DL or GL because they are base. Leather is cooler, helps with my anxiety and sunroof open also is cooler, helps with my anxiety.

I would leave the front alone personally. You'd be changing the whole front end like hood, fenders, just everything.
All the things you listed are easier to access. You can stuff a V8 in the engine bay of either car.
