Late 80s redblock issue post/article? Premature belt wear.

Post by CIK7 »

I am pretty sure it was on here where I saw a post or article about the late 80s (87-89?) redblock having an issue of some sort. I found an 89 240 I might like to buy. But the owner says the serpentine belt replaced under previous ownership wore out prematurely, had to replace it, and the new one is prematurely wearing out. I would like the link to that thread or article about late 80s redblock issues.

Those engines have 3 V-belts. Likely they are talking about the timing belt. June

240 redblock engines have an overhead cam shaft driven by a cog belt. It is driven by the crankshaft and has an idler/tensioner. Unless the crank pulley or the cam shaft pulley are damaged (I think unlikely) the issue is likely the tensioner has gone bad. Relatively easy to change these belts and idler.
Alternator, power steering and A/C compressor are all V belt drive.
