240 won't go uphill

My 1981 240 runs okay on level ground and downhill, but when going uphill the car boggs down and it becomes necessary to drop from 3rd to 2nd and sometimes to 1st. When pushing the gas pedal in, there seems to be no reaction. Any thoughts???????

Does it have carburettor or fuel injection?
