Volvo Repair Database 95 960 spark plug loom sequence (amateur mistake)

Post by bright »

Hi,
First, thanks for a great resource.

I have made an amateur's mistake. I was changing the plugs in my 95 960. This is, of course, the inline 6.

I was removing the loom (with coil pack over each plug) from the front (radiator) side of the car towards the windshield. It was obvious that they each were loom terminated over the assigned cylinder. I didn't think much of it, and popped off the remaining packs. However, 4,5,6 have pretty much the same length of loom.

That leaves an random 6 possible combinations. But there is more. As I try to fire each new combo I build up gas, making the car harder to start. So what may be the correct sequence might actually be guessed as wrong.

I know that I cannot be the only one who has ever done something like this. However, I cannot find record of such. How, in Thor's name, came you determine which pack goes over which cylinder?

Thanks,
Lee
Many Thanks,
Bright

After lots of digging I have found the firing order is 153624, 1 being at the front of the engine.

This may help:

Each coil has two wires one of which is green/red. The other wires are:
Plug #1 red/white.
Plug #2 white/black.
Plug #3 orange.
Plug #4 green/yellow.
Plug #5 yellow/brown.
Plug #6 violet.

Worked like a charm. All wiring stated was found on my car.

I was pretty close. Cylinders 4 and 5 were switched.
Thanks for the hard work.

Hey, thanks for this post as I needed the same info. But I need take it a step further and ask does the polarity
Matter as the connectors to the coil packs on my 960 after 298000 miles broke apart?

Yes it does. The red/green is soldered together in a junction point further back in the loom. Mine broke apart a couple of years ago and I rebuilt with different colours, but I kept the original polarity.

Is the Red/Green wire that's common to all the coil packs positive or negative? In other words does it plug into the positive side of the coil pack plug (+) or the (-)?

If the coil pack plugs where swapped and polarities swapped on one of plugs and the engine is trying to start but stops abruptly (clunk sound) could this be a result of the incorrect coil pack wiring?

Thanks
