88 240 M47 transmission into 89 240, crankshaft position sensor question

Post by ducttapeandzipties » Fri Aug 26, 2016 6:09 pm

I have an 89 240 with an M47 that is having shifting problems. I also have a junkyard M47 from an 88 240. Everything looks the same except for the 89 has a cutout, I believe to make room for the crank sensor. The 88 has a recessed section of the same shape. Would it be as simple as just cutting out that last bit of metal? I would consider swapping bellhousings, but the one one the 89 is cracked.

Why is the 88 different? Because they switched over to Jettronic in 89? And why would the 88 have this strange recessed section, in anticipation of a crank sensor? Sorry so many questions, just curious :)

Grind and saw it out. Changes (like LH 2.2 to LH 2.4 fuel system) often get delayed but some of the preparations are already made. The bell housing casting for M47 had that boss for the crank sensor when the trans came out in 1987.
