Good morning, I woke up this morning and went to start my car. My power steering system service failure light came on. Last year it did this and I replaced the pump but it just did it again but this time it was followed by my anti skid service light coming on as well. Any idea if this could be the pump again or possibly the rack itself. I am even hearing it could be the steering angle sensor.
Some of the symptoms are that the steering has no power currently. There is a thumping sound under the hood.
Additionally, for the past two years I have had a clunking sound when turning that I have replaced so many parts to eliminate except the actual steering rack.
I will try to get at it tonight but I have no clue what the issue is
I have replaced inner and outer tie rods, complete strut assembly, LCA's, sway bar links, wheel hubs and both axles so there are not many moving parts left to replace. Curious if this could possibly be an actual rack issue and simply need to swap that out?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I do believe it is a failing power steering pump but I am also curious if the pumps is going out because of a bad rack. My car does clunk when turning left and there is a metal on metal sound in tight turns at slow speed

Remove the battery cable to see if the code returns and if so how quickly. The Alarm Service Required and Tire Pressure warning went out today on the 07 S60 2.5T after months of being on, perhaps due to warm weather. Advance said diode on alternator is glitchy but charging and there is a new battery.
Check steering center next. Turn the steering wheel left and right lock to lock to see if the wheel is in the same but opposite position. Try it at full lock also going in circles to check rubbing or binding. Lift the front wheel off the ground and check for center, rubbing or binding. Don't have much else to offer as we've not encountered either on our 08 C30 T5 2.0 M66.

Thank you for that. Anti skid light went out. I was able to get car into garage but the power steering is cutting in and out. I just replaced the pump 11 months ago and I am starting to suspect the actual rack is bad. Car does have really odd sounding clunk while turning over uneven terrain at slow speeds and makes a metal grinding sound when turning at full turn to the left. I have replaced all of the other moving parts of the suspension and drive line and some multiple times and never got rid of that nasty clunk that only involves turning... I am going to try to replace the pump and the rack and see if I can finally get on to normal driving... My concern is that if I just swap out the pump, the next one will simply fail in a matter of time..
I really hope I am right.. Thanks for the reply

That nasty clunk, grind and sometimes feels like a vibration or wheel hop is a common problem on many C30's. One Swedespeed poster said I think it was either his timing belt or alternator / ac pulley bearing, causing the engine to buck. Glad the anti-skid is out.
