Radiator fan question
Radiator fan question
2013 S60. I just put a new thermostat and sensor in. 74K miles. I was getting a warning that the car was overheating. Fan runs when the A/C is on. Drove for about an hour in 85 degree heat...no message. My OBD read about 208 degrees. I just seem to remember that the fan would run after I stopped / turned off the engine. Does not do it now. Am I mistaken? I have to take this car for a three day trip...don't want to run into an issue.
I just ran into overheating issues on my XC70 2011 T6 for months and changing everything.
I changed the thermostat and sensor and no luck. Then I was overheating still so my radiator blew up. I replaced that. Then I blew a hose from overheating still, so I replaced that.
I replaced the radiator fan controller (you should see it right on your vehicles fan assembly) with a cheap one (not OEM) and it didn't talk right to the radiator fan assembly, most likely as I've seen because it wasn't OEM. Even if I ran 12V to the fans they would spin up, but for me they only ran when I turned the car off and it was hot to cool it down, but didn't turn on when driving around with the AC or to help cool the engine and radiator down.
If your radiator and water pump looks good and you don't see any coolant leaks or the usual suspects for those failing, I would look at all of your fuses for AC/Climate.
If those look good, your next best bet is to check the fan control module on your radiator fan itself. What fixed it for me was buying an entirely new non-OEM fan and controller module paired and shipped together. If you're iffy about buying non-OEM then look at the OEM fan controller module and drop it into the existing OEM fan you have now if that's the culprit. I did non-OEM because it was cheaper honestly.
My car's fans turn on when I approach 220-230 degrees farenheight, cool it down back to 200-210 and then cycle as needed. The boiling point and absolute no go for my XC70 is 230+ so that is when you should get concerned. Mostly when you idle at a long red light, drive through, you'll see the temps creep up. If you are getting intermittent fan behavior I would check the fan module.
