Last week our s60 T5 turbo destroyed itself. My mechanic told me the injectors dumped fuel into cylinders 1 and 5 suddenly hydro locking them up. It ran perfectly well until my wife pulled into the driveway last Wednesday and the car started jerking violently and stalled. It wouldn't start after that. After having it taken to the garage and the mechanic looking at it, it was discovered to have those cylinders full of fuel, apparently destroying the valves leaving zero compression in them. It has 116000 miles on the car and has been meticulously maintained. The timing belt was replaced at 104000 miles, we are sick about this.
Is this a common occurrence? Anyone have a similar experience with this Volvo engine?

Very strange. From what I know of hydro locking, it blows connecting rods. (Anyone please add what you know.)
Fuel can absolutely cause it, but generally its from water ingestion, like when people drive in high water (flood etc.)
My question is why did the injectors dump fuel? There is a very extreme -- nearly statistically impossible in 1000 car-lifetimes -- that both injectors just chose to fail at the same moment. Like... your house getting hit by a meteorite type of chance.
One injector? Ok, automotive mechanical failures happen a hundred times a minute across the US. But two?
Maybe the ECU went bonkers and sent these signals? But then why not all five? Why only two? One or five makes sense.
I'd press the mechanic for more of his thoughts on the double injector failure.

This sounds fishy.
If it locked up, bent connecting rods is the failure, .
Valve damage should not occur.
I would go talk to a different shop and get it properly diagnosed.
If this same shop did the timing belt, I think they screwed it up, timing belt broke or jumped time.
It really needs diagnosing by a volvo specialist indie shop....not dealership.
Ask for a price on a good used engine, $4 to 5K would be my guess.
Used engines cost 2K to3K.

Agree with the others. This is odd. Are they sure it didn’t fuel flood on attempted starts?
