Replaced engine/Oil consumption in XC60 2011

Post by cinematree » Sun Mar 20, 2016 12:25 am

I'm considering buying a used 2011 XC60. I saw on this forum there was an issue with the oil consumption on the 2011 and 2012 XC60s, and that some were potentially recalled. From the Carfax, this car had the engine replaced at 42,000 miles (it now has 79,000). Before the engine was replaced, there were a few visits (within 10,000 miles) with oil consumption tests performed. After the engine was replaced, there were no more oil consumption tests. Does anyone know if an engine replacement would likely lead to the end of oil consumption issues (would Volvo be careful to provide a replacement engine that would be free of the issue)?

And secondly, the "engine/powertrain computer/module" was reprogrammed twice within a few weeks in 2015. Is that normal? Might that be some kind of software upgrade? And two months later the "computer" was again reprogrammed.

Thank you so much for your time.

There were widespread issues with a PCV system in post 2010 Audi and Bmw - so perhaps it's the same in Volvo. The dealers replaced the PCV part with a new redesigned one and depending on further damage pistons/rings were also replaced. With the redesigned PCV part the issue should have been fixed.

Do not expect Volvo to be of any help if the car is out of warranty.

As for the reprogramming, that looks like the car has some transmission issue. Several 2010+ S60 owners mentioned annoying transmission behavior, which Volvo was not able to fix. Other owners did not notice any issue with these same transmissions. Typically, Volvo will try a software update, but won't look into mechanical issues. By the past, Volvo had completely ignored design malfunctions in transmissions causing owners to pay thousands of dollars out of their pockets. I'd suggest testing the car (transmission) extensively on a two days driving if possible. European forums can also help, they have several reports on the XC60 (http://volvoforums.org.uk/)
