Coronavirus Thread

Post by matthew1 »

[Please keep politics to a minimum in this topic. I'm bending the rules to allow a small, reasonable bit of it, because CV and politics do overlap somewhat.]

[We have a bright membership here, and I figure the discussion of this would be beneficial to me and perhaps you.]

So, CV is real, and fairly scary. It feels a lot like 9/11.

My ex, an RN, wants to go into bunker mode with our kid. No more soccer, school. Carefully controlled contact with anyone outside our homes, etc.

We just went over what we collectively own: vitamins, food, medical supplies, cleaning agents, etc.

If my dad gets it he's done for. He has heart problems. Had a stroke 18 months ago. Has high blood pressure. Takes blood thinners and a dozen other things. He's 78 years old.

What are your thoughts about CV?

You should already have what you need in your house based on standard prep for power outage, blizzard, earthquake , etc.
These runs on masks , tp, hand cleaner are indicative of the uninformed.

We can’t stop the virus from getting in, but what we are trying to do is stop the huge spike in cases so that health care services aren’t overwhelmed, and smooth that out over the next few months

Most of us who get it just need to stay home and ride it out like a flu.

Travel bans from EU “ except for countries that look like us” don’t make a lot of sense for this “ foreign virus”

I'm not terribly worried, sure people have died, people have recovered from it. The scary thing is it's unknown to us. It's just like the flu, people die from it, people recover from it. Only difference is the flu has a vaccine to help people recover and we have more information on it, therefore it's less contagious and manageable.

Vaccines help prevent the spread, they don't aid in recovery.

Typically, the flu vaccine is between 40-60% effective in protecting the individual from getting flu. This creates enough people who don't get the flu to prevent it from widespread distribution. You don't get a flu vaccine for you, its for everyone else, even if you are healthy.

Our worst recent flu year was about 60M cases in the US, the Corona could be 3-4x that. We just need to keep the peak of the infections low with social engineering so that Health Services arent overwhelmed, since we don't have a vaccine for now or next Fall.

The flu vaccine has been shown to decrease severity and duration of illness if one still gets the flu after getting vaccinated.

I think Michael Osterolm is the gold standard in this field. Here he is being interviewed by Joe Rogan, with some bonus opinions on chronic wasting and Lyme:

Simple thing to remember - Just keep your hands in your pockets ! You can even put a rubber band around your wrist to remind yourself.
If you keep that in mind, you will probably be less likely to shake hands or inadvertently touch your face. But even that is just delaying the inevitable. Mother Nature pushing back....
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

I think the biggest thing is to not buy into the hype... just be smart. Wash your hands frequently! Just not the best option around here right now, my county discovered E. Coli in the water... wonderful! That could have a thread of its own over the lack of communication from the local government... the school system, of all agencies, were the ones to alert people this morning. 4 days after they allegedly discovered this! Anyway, back on topic...

As usual, the media just wants to blow things out of proportion. And I'm not trying to downplay the virus itself, there have been deaths and for people in less than good health already it can be bad. But, from what I understand it's no worse than the flu. It's just something new for people to worry about.
