Buy 2015 XC70 140,000 miles?

Post by InMaine »

Hi, neighbor I am friendly with is selling his 2015.5 Volvo XC 70 with 140,000. He suggested $13,000 as the price. He has owned it since new. It is in excellent condition. I called my mechanics to ask about 2015 XC70s in general and they said many parts are hard or impossible to get and I should stay away from it. So 2 things. Is this correct about parts availability? And is 140,000 miles most of the life of this car, yes I know some people get 300,000 but you know what I mean, in general. I am a 68 year old retired woman who can't afford to have lots of repairs or spend more than this much for a car.
My last car was a 2008 Mercedes E350 4Matic, which I bought in 2012 but was totaled in an accident recently and it had only 72,000 miles! ;( Before that I had a 1999 Mercedes E320 which I bought brand new- had to do it once in my life but never again :) So Mercedes E sedans for quite awhile. I would have probably never looked at a Volvo wagon if I hadn't seen my neighbor's for sale. He's a wealthy man and takes excellent care of all his things.

Do you need station wagon for your daily life? What are your requirements needs for the car? Xc70 is a great car and parts are not a problem at all. It will be big car with poor economy 22mpg average with high maintenance cost. If you will decide that it is a right car for you-take it to the dealer and pay for check up. You dont want to buy a car and find out it needs ton of work. What about leasing a new car? Everyone's retirement income and goals are different, so it is hard to suggest without knowing needs and wants.

I have owned a 2001 Mercedes E320 and 2001 Volvo V70 T5 for about 10 years each. Mercedes has 180K miles and Volvo 218K miles.
The Mercedes is smoother and quieter and has not required any major repairs (yet). Mercedes parts can be expensive especially electronics.
The Volvo is more fun to drive and has needed more repairs. Parts tend to be cheaper.

That price is too high in my opinion.

More importantly do research on “Volvo oil burning”—I believe the 2015-16 cars were the ones with piston ring issues, an incredibly expensive problem to fix. Volvo fixed some cars in warranty but I think time has now passed for that.

Hello Maine!

I’m guesssing you don’t drive much based on your past car ownership

I would go older. Like pre 2013 , in the P2 chassis for your car. A 100k mile XC70 will be well under 10,000 and will serve you well

What engine is the car fitted with? If it is the T5 I would not recommend it unless there is proof the bad pistons rings the suffered from in 2015-16 have been replaced. T6 version would be ok. Price is high for the mileage. I'd not expect to pay that in CDN$.

Greetings,

I've owned three Volvos over 35 years and they've all required regular and often unusual maintenance needs. But each of them has meant a lot to me.

Unless money is no issue don't get a Volvo, that is unless you have a good independent mechanic familiar with these cars; and in my experience there's not many around. Basically, if it's a low-maintenance relationship you want don't get the Volvo.

On the other hand, if you do the trouble-shooting, and the maintenance, and drive them respectfully these cars can serve a loooong time, and inspire loyalty. Good luck.
