Oil pump priming. V70 2008, 2.4d

Post by emtor »

I've been repairing my V70, no repair possible outside in winter, so the car has not been started for about a year.
Amongst other things I've replaced the front crank seal after first removing the oil pump.
So, the oil pump is now dry as a bone, and I'm wondering how long it would take the oil to travel from the pick-up in the sump, through the oil pump and filter before it reaches the oil galleries in the engine.
Here's the question: -Would it be a good idea to prime the oil pump by filling some oil through the filter housing before starting?

This is one of the invented issues that gets all sorts of bad forum traffic.

Just start it and idle normally, watching for the oil pressure to come up and turn the light off in the first 5-10 seconds. Bring it to normal temperature, then a short test drive.

COntrary to internet myth, 99% of engine wear does not occur on startup due to oil starved bearings.

I once idled my T5 for 30 minutes with clogged oil passages, essentially with zero oil pressure. At idle, there is almost no load on bearings. That same engine now has 265k miles on it.

You could just crank it over for 10-15 seconds using the white remote cranking connection underhood, or disable fuel pressure by pulling a fuse or relay, alternatively.

Its an engine, not a neuron.

Thanks for replying.
Would pulling the before mentioned fuse (fuel pressure) generate fault codes?

Just noticed you have a diesel. I’m not sure on the fault codes on that model. There’s probably a stop solenoid you can disconnect
