s80 2.5 T engine

Post by kielbasa »

Hi,
I couldn't find any specific info on this matter.
What's the actual difference between the 2.5T engine from an S60R and the 2.5T from an S80? I'm interested in the way it's built (internals), not the outside parts like oil filter location.
I'm considering buying an S80 in manual (3.0 t6 apparently didn't come with a manual transmission) and wanted to know if these S80 2.5 engines are as prone to cracking as the R version, and if they are easily modified too? What's the manual transmission limit on this model (torque-wise)?
I know there's a limitation since 2.5T manual versions came in the FWD only (correct me if I'm wrong), but it would be nice to hear any info on that too.
Thanks!

Hello,
In regard to engine internals, the S80 2.5T and S60R 2.5T share the same basic block and internals (open-deck 2.5L I5). The R is not reinforced internally; it just runs much higher boost and a bigger turbo, which is why Rs see more failures.
Moreover, S80 2.5T engines are far less prone to block cracking at stock or mild tune levels. Cracking is mainly a result of high boost/cylinder pressure, not a unique R block flaw.
In addition, S80 2.5T is fine for moderate tuning (roughly T5 levels). Pushing to R power or beyond without supporting mods increases cracking risk. Finally, Manual S80 2.5T is FWD only (you’re correct). Torque limit is roughly 350–400 Nm; clutch and gearbox usually fail before the engine.
