Anyone Done A Transmission Swap on '08 XC70

Post by lewisness »

Hey folks, I'm pondering swapping out my shuddering, rumbling, slam-shifting trans for a low mile junk yard tranny. Anyone have experience with this?

I've swapped motors on my son's S70 T5m and have the use of a friend's fully loaded repair shop at night so it won't be a driveway job.

Would one pull the engine/trans or drop the sub frame or...? Would I need the TCM from the donor car?

Thanks in advance. Jim

How many miles? Have you done the obligatory transmission drain and fills before writing off the tranny as junk?

There's just under 100K. I did not do any drain/fills. I took it to the dealer to diagnose and estimate the repair as I am not too enthusiastic about these bigger jobs the older I get. They basically told me to pound sand by way of the $9000 estimate they gave me. They charged me for 2 hours of labor at $140 a copy and I left. Grrrr.

At 100k miles even if no prior transmission fluid changes, you may be well short of the need to change the box. First thing I'd do is find some appropriate spec. tranny fluid and do 3-4 drain and fills and see if that helps you out. You'd be amazed what clean transmission fluid can do for you. The only wrench I'd put on that car for now is on the transmission drain plug. A case of transmission fluid is way cheaper than even a used transmission.

Drain and fill, not flush. Flush may dislodge nasty stuff and wreak havoc. Gentle is the key here.

And it won't necessarily show dramatic improvement after just one drain/fill cycle. Three or four cycles will show maximum improvement.

Roger that. More like a slow infusion of clean fluid over a period of time (or miles)?

Exactly, although some will say simply shifting the car between gears on jack stands is a sufficient means of circulating the fluid between D & F cycles, so the draining and filling can be done in a short span of time, I've never tried it that way. I usually wait a week or so of driving between D & Fs, but whose to say it can't be done differently?

Unscrew the TX40 and then undo the 17mm inside hex and let it drain for 30 min or more. Start and immediately kill the engine to get it to burp a little more fluid and let it drain for a few. Then a gallon will be the correct fill and you can skip the warm and drip biz for fluid level.
