Scrubbed up my son’s old E30 while on vacation.
He bought a new electric car, so he doesn’t use it, covered in dust and pine needles. He doesn’t want to sell it to a stranger, and asked if I’d take it back. We built it up over several years together, swapped in a manual, and I sold it to him for a dollar. He’s driven it all over the country, it has 210,000 miles.

Me too! I think I’ll pay him real money, he’ll object. But I’m his dad.

Guaranteed he’ll want it back in 10 or 15 years. There’s an elastic magnetism we car guys have with pretty cars we’ve owned.

Like the Papa John’s founder who tracked down his Camaro 30 years later.

An E30 with a handle, assembled together with my son, and with such mileage - not just a car, but a memory in metal. I think there is little that compares to when you take back a car that you built together. I completely understand why he doesn't want to sell it to a stranger.

Am I weird that the first thing I noticed (other than those bad le car decals) is that she has to open her door to get in while he sits belted in? Maybe he’s busy getting the mix tape into the cassette…
