What are the yellow jackets doing, eating the hornet?

I suspect they react to the hornet as a threat as they like to eat larva of most anything. Kind of like bees , who individually have no defense against an invading hornet. They form a ball, wait until there is a moment, then jump on the hornet and create a huge ball of bees around it. The then up their activity level until the heat in the ball cooks the hornet to death
