Volvo Electrifying All Models By 2019

Post by 93Regina »

Starting in 2019, every Volvo will come standard with a battery and an electric motor. Some will be hybrids, some will be plug-in hybrids, and some will be pure electric cars. The company, which has been owned by Geely since 201o, says it will introduce 5 all-electric cars between 2019 and 2021. Three will branded as Volvos and two will carry the Polestar logo. Polestar started as an independent tuning operation. Volvo bought the company recently and says it will become a separate brand for high-performance electric cars going forward.

I guess we never get the 450hp 2.0 drive e engine Volvo teased us with back in 2014. I figured the Japanese automatic transmissions Volvo likes to use probably couldn't handle it reliably. That's what I thought until now. With this news yesterday they have been preparing for years aiming for electric and not giving us high powered internal combustion engines. I am not against electric cars as I have driven one and it was quite fast and very quiet. Here in my area fast charge stations have been popping up. Tesla cars are everywhere in my neighborhood. I think Tesla is the current trendy car like BMW and Porche used to be around here. All the years I have been driving Volvos turbo charged engines, electric will take some getting used to. It kind of feels like this is the mark indicating the end of a era. June

"Geely also owns The London Taxi Company and has invested nearly $400 million into an all-new factory to build the TX5, a plug-in hybrid version of the iconic London taxi that will have significantly lower emissions than the diesel-powered cabs that have plied the streets of London for the past 40 years. London will require all new cabs to be battery powered starting on January 1, 2018."

Geely must have more money than God! I have never looked in to Geely before and was unaware they owned a British car company as well. When they bought Volvo from Ford I worried that Volvo was over. Really Volvo is a one of a kind car company in regards to safety inventions an to lose Volvo would really be unthinkable. When I saw the first NEW XC90 I realized Geely knows what they have and obviously is serious about the product. Then seeing the S90, V90 I thought Geely is investing serious money into Volvo and bringing the Swedish ergonomic design back to my delight. Now with this new development Geely has to be investing truck loads of money. Ford really was stupid not to do anything with Volvo in my opinion. Other things like the lifetime warranty parts and labor on repairs is simply brilliant. I was surprised that when I had both axles replaced March 2016 the car developed a slight vibration I thought for a good six months was a tire because they did a tire rotation too, but was the left axle and Volvo replaced both sides at no charge or hesitation. Yes to replace the faulty one without question was expected, but when I got the invoice and saw both were replaced I was really surprised. I asked my advisor why both were replaced and he said Volvo wanted both axles sent back for inspection. Now that's a high level of commitment to the customer (me). In a nutshell I feel confident Geely is committed to Volvo and will continue providing us with a top notch technically advanced safe product. June

Great news from China, love it. I mean, I will be always look at combustion engines in sport cars with nostalgia, nothing can replace this, but having fresh air inside cities in the not so far future is just a great scenario. That being said, let's hope all safety measures and quality check will be at the highest standards, as these electric batteries look scary when - and if - they catch in fire

I read an interview in a Danish paper about a couple of weeks ago when one of the top managers in Volvo Sweden explained how Geely didn't interfere with the 'Swedish' way of thinking in terms of safety, use of quality materials and such.

Yes, their plastics and adhesives could be better, but the steel they've been using and the electroplating done to chassis parts is in my humble opinion outstanding.

That they now focus on only electric and hybrid engines is just a step in the right direction. That the batteries require materials polluting the planet even more than combustion engines do is however a fact not many people seem overly concerned about.

Future looks bright for Volvo. Greely was a good match. 10-15 years from now I suspect Volvo/Greely story be cited as a case study in smart long term strategy and investment - and how that contrasts from Ford's approach during the 2000s that basically went nowhere fast.

In China, they are committed to renewable energy, and decreasing coal/fuel usage. China is a big market place.

I would suspect Greely is making business decisions, in terms of potential future events, as he sees it.

Tesla’s Electric Cars Aren’t as Green as You Might Think - (The Union of Concerned Scientists agrees; it found that even when you add in emissions from battery manufacturing, EVs generate half the emissions of a conventional car over the course of its life.)

Chinese investors tend to be more long term oriented than US venture capital/stock portfolio managers. We've turned into a culture of get rich quick schemes which in the long term puts us at a serious disadvantage. If you haven't noticed...US major new domestic manufacturing facilities that are popping up have been shifting more and more to foreign ownership. By no fault of the Chinese or anyone else - it is evidence of our own self inflicted problems.
