Polestar vs IPD tune?

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

Polestar vs IPD tune?

Post by kcodyjr » Tue Jun 14, 2016 5:27 pm

Has anyone driven both a Polestar car and the same model with an IPD tune?

Preferably a post-2011 C70. I'm considering buying one, a 2012 with only 31k on the clock, and I know I won't be content to leave it alone, especially with their reputation for lackluster performance in stock configuration.

Well, there are others too including Elevate, http://www.ardideas.com/ and Hilton Tuning (which is currently all the rage)...also there are other options for rear sways as too. Viva Performance is a good place to start in looking at some of these options. As your car is a P1 chassis (same as my S40), I added a beefier than IPD's rear sway from Racing Beat- it was originally for a Mazda 3 Speed...cheaper too. I'm not sure if it would fit your car but it's worth a look on a few other forums including Swedespeed in order to see what others are going. Cork Sport is another company making rear sway bars. If you do the rear, you'll probably want to do the front strut tower mount- I got mine from Ultra Racing...I also added their mid chassis (under the car) bracing. Yes, Polstar and IPD are tried and true but you also spend a pretty penny for these and they aren't always the best out there at the current time.

Thank you, I'll look into Elevate and Hilton.

ARD's website suggests they don't support later than 2009.

I was thinking about the rear sway from IPD and the OE strut bar from -2009's. I don't want to get TOO aggressive with suspension mods because I want it to remain smooth, compliant, and predictable. The stiffer they get, the better numbers you can get out of the car, but the more suddenly it let go at the limit. I'm afraid of defeating the DTSC.

Did you notice a big improvement from the mid chassis bracing?

Note, vivaperformance is reselling the IPD rear sway by the looks of it; the picture is identical down to where the little widgets are placed.

My S40 is a manual T5 AWD...so upgrading the front bar was pretty much a real hassle and out of the question. I was also afraid of 27mm being too aggressive for the rear sway bar but between AWD and DTSC, it's a good fit- and yes, I did notice a good difference. I feel more solid- but I also added a mid-chassis brace from Ultra Racing. I'm not sure if it really helped because i did these mods at the same time but to be honest, the car feels great! Let me add that for the rear sway bar, my biggest issue was finding a beefy end link that I felt could deal with the added torque. My OEM links were shot and were going to be expensive to replace and I was not confident in them. I looked around long and hard and found a company out of Taiwan (Proforged) who actually advertised to have end links for "modified" cars- the other end links- OEM Volvo as well as Moog and a few others were very specific in regards to them not honoring the warranty if the car was lowered or modified (which mine is). I corresponded with this company and they were very helpful- in fact, some of the suggestions i made to them, they are incorporating into their next run of these and are sending me an upgraded pair for free! Here is what I got in terms of the end links (sort of gets me excited knowing I may be the first S40 owner that has used these!): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0096 ... UTF8&psc=1

I understand that you might not want to go to aggressive in the rear if you don't have AWD to take up the slack. Please post back and let us know what you ended up doing!

I'm still weighing options for a tune and probably will be for some time. I'm starting to think I should get the tune from whomever I like the exhaust mods and whatnot. Seems reasonable to assume their tune would work best with their stuff. Any word on the noise level from Elevate's catback?

That said, I'm more interested in a beefier transmission torque mount than the rear sway at this point. I can see what some people say, that it doesn't really inspire confidence under spirited driving, but at the end of the day the car makes the moves - it just feels a little odd doing it, after being in an 850 for so long. However, there's a noticeable tap when I hit the gas briefly and then let entirely off it, and it's annoying.

Bump?

Looking for any opinions about any tune for a 2012 P1 car, especially opinions about Polestar, IPD, or Elevate tunes. Bonus points if anyone's driven more than one tune on the same model car.
