2000 S40 Knocking Sound While Accellerating

Post by BadKarma »

Hello All,

Quick question, I have a knocking problem while I Speed up. it only knocks once when I speed up from a stop, or when I am going forward, stop, and then put the vehicle in reverse. Like I said it doesn't happen all the time, but enough for me to notice the klunking sound it makes.

From what I have gathered, it may be a CV Joint that is going. Does this sound right to every one else? If so, I also found on a few websites that average cost for replacement of a CV joint is in upwards of $800. Is there a cheaper way to do this? I am quite mechanicly inclined and could get the tools for the job. Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Aaron

get full lock and drive slowly try both directions, if it makes the noise worse then its almost certainly cv related,

an alternative is that it could be an engine mount that had gone or is going? check for exessive movement, . handbrake on & get bitting point whilst a freind looks at the engine and under the car at the exhaust pipe

when i steer left or right I don't get the same noise. I live in Wisconsin and Drive to Minnesota every day for work. In the winter, the roads get really crappy and the asphalt buckles creating large bumps in the road and potholes as well. So since it does not do it when I go around corners, just when I speed up it could very well be engine mounts. Now that you mention it, I also noticed that every once in a while I would start my car and hear the same sound when I kicked over.

Is this a common thing with S40's

Do you by chance know how easy it would be to repair something like this, and if not that easy is it expensive?

doent sound like cv to me then...

engine mounts seem to be a common problem on V40's so i guess s40's aswell

i had to replace one of mine and its quite easy to do yourself if youve got a jack & a socket set and some kind of support stand (for safety)

here in the uk the top engine mount next to the waterbottle costs
