Oil change

Post by Brandon »

I just changed the oil in my 2000 S40 that I just bought 2 weeks ago. I changed it because it was burning a little bit after long drives. The car only has 32,000 miles on it. When I went under neath to take the oil filter off I had to slowly unscrew it for a really long time with a filter wrench until it was loose enough to unscrew with my hand. My question is: is the oil filter suppose to just be tightened hand tight or should it be screwed in until it is flush with the metal which seems really difficult to do.

If you notice on the filter canister there is a little lip that is right below the rubber O-ring. That should be flush with the metal. If not you could get some leaks, mainly if you use a full systhetic oil. I just use my hands, but that is only if you can get at it easily. My friend had a "pit" in his garage so that is cheating a little. When I cannot get to his place I just use the wrench.

shud be screwed witha filter wrench upto this rubber O-ring. If handfighted, oil will leak out according to my experiences

You should always use a torque wrenh and set it to 25nm. Thats the best advice. The worst thing is hand tightening and having oil spilling.

I just got a used S40, I like it very much. Every how many miles does it need an oil change?? every 3000, 5000 or 7500?
